  • Western Carolinian October 20* 1994 Sports Grates Guilf David Driscoll Stuff Reverter The Western Carolina Rugby Football Club defeated Guilford College last Saturday to secure their undefeated standing in the Divisionl conference by a score of 33-3. "I think that the team as a whole played real hard", said scrum half, Jason Harris. "Everything that we worked so hard for in practice finally came together." The Argyles utilized the combination of strong defense and striking offense in their strategic attack against Guilford. The forward's aggressive efforts paid off as they sealed the Guilford players from gaining possession of the ball throughout the game. Several successful lineout opportunities were denied to the Argyles, who had won the possessions, when the Guilford hooker tossed indirect throw-ins. Prop, Jason Grimmett and Lock, David Walsh scored two of the four tries in the match. % half, Shell Pearce made one of the two field goal attempts after the scores. The back line's game plan nearly never flawed as they penetrated the Guilford defense to an average of 28 meters per ball carry. The Argyles's back defense kept Guilford's average gain of close to a mere five meters. As a result, several crucial Guilford offensive plays were spoiled when the Argyles' defense stood at few. The Argyles' offensive movement was successful due to their constant running support and team work. Outside center, Neil Hines scored the remaining two tries for the Argyles with an average of 35 meters per carry. Pearce made both of the field goal attempts. "I think that we finally played to our potential", said Pearce. "If we keep practicing like we have been, then I do not think we will have any trouble with the rest of the clubs in our conference." After the fall break, Western Carolina Rugby Club will go to battle in another conference match against Davidson Rugby Club on Saturday, Nov. 5 , on the track field at 1:00.
