It was totally my fault. In paragraph one of column four I said that Rush attacked the U.S. position in Bosnia on his April 18 radio show. When I went back to the source of this information I found that everything Shenk reported came solely from the television show. 'Isn't it my job- to lay it on the mob- and get them off their asses to fight against these fascists!' -Butterfly of Digable Planets This week I want to talk about fairness, and maybe a little unfairness that I've seen around campus. But nobody wants to hear about the really dirty stuff. I think it adds excitement and variety to life, I thrive off it. This is definitely the •Voice of the Catamounts,' at least as expressed through those with enough gumption to speak in dissent of the status quo. I am disgusted at all the people who have attacked the Editor in a personal manner. She is paid to express her views and oversee the compilation and production of this paper. The school only allows her twenty hours per week of pay, but I know she puts more hours into her job than that. In other words, she is under a lot of pressure and must meet strict and inflexible dead- linesj all for little recognition. Frorti another journalist's standpoint, I say she is doing a good job. If sh" didn't get her work done up hpre at the WC the whole campus would know. That would not be like turning in a research paper two days late for the penalty of one letter grade. If those who verbally assault her were any less than reactionary, they would let this lady have her opinion. She allows you to voice your opinion on the editorial pages. Why not let her do so, without fear of mean-spirited attacks, in turn? Leveling personal attacks such as "condemnation to hell," "bitch," and "racist," is no way to comment on a person's expression of attitudes through a main duty of their job. How would you feel if you had one of your tests returned by a professor, graded F, with a note in red ink saying "good job shithead?" Also, in fairness to allcolumnists writing for the newspapers of secular state universities should do nothing other than express worldly views. There are more than enough Christian views which are widely and abundantly available on this campus. I know some Christians write for the WC. I do not know for certain, because it rarely comes up in conversations among open- minded people. There is also a gospel show on Power 91. I think it is highly unfair that this university coddles Christianity. Several Christian-affiliated student centers, Churches in actuality, are on campus or in close proximity to it At the beginning of the semester I found a press release at the WC office about Jewish students on campus. Since there is obviously a Jewish element of the student body, I have to wonder where their student center is. There are also quite a few Wiccans in Cullowhee. They do not have a student center because public recognition puts them in fear. Not just fear of persecution or discrimination, but of physical harm. It is a shame they cannot do what Brother Birdsong does, in their characteristically calm and rational way, without apprehension tor their well-being. For they know better than anyone today what the Spanish Inquisition was Social Commentary by Williams & Other Maniacs. like, from the wrong end of the torch. If you want a good example of typical unfair treatment of religious minorities in rural America come to the WC office and read "Burning Times Are Not ■ Over" in the December 2,1993 issue. A sad commentary about the sad state of free speech and religious freedom in this country. All blessings to Wiccan brothers and sisters who do their best to make this world a more tolerant and friendly place to live. Last fall semester someone detonated1 a bomb in a Harrill stairwell. Somebody told Public Safety I did it. I was not even on campus when the incident took place. Nevertheless, I was questioned about this act of anarchy and terror not mind that, but there was no need for Campus Policemen to come get me in my room at 1:00 am. I happened to be in the shower at the time. They were courteous enough to let me finish my shower, but that's where consideration ended. An entourage of RAs and Police took me to the residence staff office in the lobby of Harrill. I was questioned by a high-ranking member of Public Safety. His manner was intimidating and he put the burden of proof of innocence on me. Most of the questions he asked were irrelevant to the commission of the crime I was accused of, such as personal associations and what I did when I went off campus. This whole affair went no fur. ie., '* it it was enough to leave the L '1 i i.e of unfairness in my mouth. Lest you think the wrong thing I will let you know that I am not anti-Christian, atheist, or totally pessimistic. But sometimes pragmatic negativity is better thar. an unrealistic positive atitude. Don't condemn me to hell because I will not stand for it. Nobody but the Almighty has that right (I think some of you need to read Matthew 7). Even though I v\ as r.-vned Christian I no longei practice that faith. It leaves my mind with too many unanswered questions. The "Golden Rule" is still the foundation of my strong personal, moral and ethical foundation, though. Most Christians say it is bad to question your faith, but what faith is worth having if it l^asn't withstood doubt and scrutiny?
