Stephen Pritchard brought Wilhoit home with an RBI ground out. With two outs Roth seemed to lose control. He walked the next two batters. On the final pitch to Jody Henson the ball got past catcher Sy Jones, and Connolly trotted home from third. Connolly's third hitof the game, asingle to center, scored Roy Hurst and put the Cats up 4-0 in the fifth inning. The Cats continued the assault in the next inning as Marc Stricker hit an RBI single to left, scoring Henson and running the lead out to 5-0. Beverlin had few problems in the early innings as only one batter reached as far as third base in the first six innings. But the Eagles tried to mount a comeback in the seventh inning and finally broke the shutout. Mark Hamlin led off the inning with an infield single and was followed by Jones whosingledaswell. Jason Andrews brought Hamlin home with a single down the left- field line. Beverlin settled down after that. He struck out Darren Prozzo then coaxed Matt Wilson to ground out to shortstop and ended the threat when Tyson Whitley hit a soft liner to Pritchard. The Eagles would come back in the next inning and chase Beverlin from the game. Kevin Hallman walked to lead off and was moved to second with two outs. That convinced LeClair to go to thebullpen. With WCU's single-season save record on the line, Mike Manning would not disappoint. The right-handed sidearmergot Jones to ground out to Stricker. He ended the inning without any damage. Game Two: Western took their momentum from the first game and parlayed it into a sweep as they pounded the Eagles 10-2 behind the complete game pitching performance of Joe Jack Sellers and the solid hitting of the whole team. Eightof theCats' nine batters picked up hits in the game, with Henson and Hurst leading the way with three each. BothHurst and Tidick drove in four runs to give them 29 and 26, respectively, on the season. Henson, meanwhile, went a perfect 3- 3 in the game and scored four runs, giving the lead-off hitter 29 this season. Henson wenthitless in the firstgame, despite hitting the ball hard, but made up for it in the second game. Henson raised his batting average .16 points to 344 with the perfect performance at the plate. Sports 11 "I was seeing the ball well today," the junior center fielder from Shelby said after thegame. "They'rejuststartingtofall. Ihad a little hitch in my swing early in the season, but I've corrected it." After allowing three hits in the first two innings Sellers settled down and allowed just two more over the next four innings. The Eagles jumped on top in the second game when Tommy Peterman brought Wilson home wi th a ground out in the top of the first inning. The momentum was shortlived for the Eagles, however, as the Cats got the run back in the bottom of the inning. Henson and Stricker both singled to start the inning, and Hurst brought Henson home. Two innings later the Cats took the lead with three runs on four hits. Two singles and a walk loaded up the bases with no outs. Tidick then brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Back-to- back doubles by Hurst and Wilhoit plated two more runs. The inning could have been bigger, but two Catamount runners were gunned out on the base pads. Stricker was cutdownathome, while Wilhoitwas thrown out trying to stretch his double into a triple. Two innings later Henson led off with a double and was joined on the base pads by Strickerwhenhewashitbyapitchthatwent wild. Tidick drove in Henson with a single, and Hurstbroughthome Stricker and Tidick witha loopingsingleinto left-center. Wilhoit then brought Hurst home with an RBI ground-out. Tidick moved the Cat lead out to 10-1 when he singled home Henson and Chad Moore the next inning. "I thought we probably played our best two ballgames in three weeks," LeClair said. "We had some tired bats coming into the series, but the fans really picked us up. I think that it was big, coming out and playing as well as we did." Game Three: Sunday's scheduled game against the Eagles was cancelled because of heavy rain. Southern Conference rules state that there are no make-ups for conference games. The Cats host Tennessee, ranked seventh in the Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division 1 Baseball Poll on Wednesday at 3pm. WCU will travel to Marshall this weekend for a three game series. They will host USC- Aiken, Eastern Kentucky, VMI and Winthrop during the next two weeks. Sunday, April 3 Located between Catnips & Univ. Mini-Market Near l^MiHVlCTTTVi; 30pm
