P»rc 16 mi WESTERN CAROLINIAN/April rO. I960 Surles on sports By Steve Surles Western Carolina's baseball learn has really been on a tear lately ..as a team the Cats have hit .385 in their last four games, going 56 of 146 combined in the two wins over UNC-Wilmington and Campbell University. Willie Carpenter himself was 11 for 17 | .6471 in the four games and sophomore first baseman Don Ingle added nine rbi's during the same span...The team batting average is now up to an eye-opening .311. As far as (he records show, Catamount relief pitcher Doug Mitchell has set a single season school record number of saves with four. Doug is a transfer from Montreal-Anderson Junior College and in leu games and almost 12 innings of pitching has an ERA of 1.23. Soccer Coach Malcolm l.oughlin pulled the eoup of the year when he arranged for former New York Cosmo's star, Shep Messing, to come put on one of his free soccer clinics in Cullowhee, May 3. Messing, now playing pro soccer in an indoor league, aroused some controversy a few > cars, back while with the Cosmo's, which is nothing unusual. The clinic is sponsored by the Skoal and Happy Days smokeless Tobacco. Anyone who saw Western Carolina's Purple-White intrasquad football game Thursday night may have noticed something very different in the offensive approach as several option plays were run,and one a 30 yard run by Gerald Harp, was very successful. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cats use the option on occasion next season... Now thai major league baseball season is upon us, I've been asked to bless the readers with a few of my famous | infamous | and recently made fun of— predictions. NATIONAL EAST 1- Philadelphia—a (lop last year, but they'll have a healthy pitching staff and maybe even gel a good year oul of Tug McGraw out of the bullpen. They have loo many guys who can have good years al the plate, too. NATIONAL WEST 1- 1 os Angeles—my perennial favorite. Still have the best infield and the potentially besl pitching la healthy Forsler and Welch-free agents Gollz and Stanhouse|. AMERICAN WEST 1- California forget about Nolan Kvan -he was jusl a .500 pitcher any Hay; the Angels have Baylor, Grich, Carcw, Lansford, and a good enough pitching staff to carry what I think Is an improving division from top to bottom. AMERICAN EAST 1- The hardest pick because four teams have the material to be the besl team in baseball Baltimore, New York, Boston, and Milwaukee. The Orioles have lo be a favorite, but if the Yanks can slabili/c the pitching staff thev could rework the old magic. The Red Sox and Brewers have lots of question marks both injury-wise and pilehing-wisc |i.e. Hisle for the Brewers, lisk for the Sox| but their day-in-day-out bats are nothing short of awesome. Probably the only prediction I'll make about this division is thai the Cleveland Indians will not win the championship. Men's tennis loses fourth straight Western Carolina's men's tennis Icani lost its fourth straight 9-0 decision with a Southern Conference defeat at Furman University. April 2. The last time the Cats. 1-9 overall and 0-4 in Southern Conference play, won a game in a match was in their 8-1 loss to VMI Match 28 at Johnson City. Tennessee. The Cats were scheduled to play last Tennessee State in Cullowhee April 8. but bad weather forced postponement of that match. April 10 against Brevard College, also at 3 p.m. Softball sweep Western Carolina's women's Softball team swept a doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhync Wednesday. The next home action for the team will be Tuesday, April 14, when the Lady Cats entertain Appalachian State in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at the Reid Gym field. Pre-season football Quarterback Ronnie Mixon. a freshman from Charleston, SC, scored the game's only touchdown with a one-yard run with 7:25 left to play in the game to giv c the Purple team a 6-0 victory in the annual Purple-White intrasquad football game. April 3. al Whitmore Stadium. The Purple team, generating only 60 yards of offense in the game, set the score up on a 42-yard pass interference play from Mixon to Catback wide receiver Gerald Harp. Three plays later Mixon, one of the top contenders for Western's quarterback position, vacated by the departed Mike Pusey, went around the left side on a keeper play for the game's only score. Specialist Karl Witze missed the extra point attempt. The honorary head coach of the Purple team was Larry Pope, sports director of The Asheville Citizen- Times. His counterpart on the White team was David Steele, the sports director of WLOS-TV 13. Leading the White team offensively was Leonard Williams' 36 rushing yards and Eddie McGill's 48 pass receiving yards. Golf tournament The men's golf team, 4-2 in dual matches, travels to the Shadowmoss Country Club in Charleston, SC. April 10-12 to play in the Citadel Golf Tournament.
