  • 8 Careers March 29, 1994 Western Carolinian Students, professionals talk in new WCU forum Karl Rohr Cap Center Staff Alumni of WCU who have succeeded beyond university walls have a chance to return and offer advice to students through a new program. The 1994 WCU Alumni Leadership Forum will continue through April 22 andwill feature meetings between students and outstanding alumni who have specialized in the students' particular academic areas. The alumni will talk to students who are planning similar careers. The forums are sponsored by the Office of Alumni Affairs, the WCU Honors Program, the Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society and the Career and Academic Planning Center. The academic departments work with Alumni Affairs to identifyappropriatealumni and are responsible for the selection. Each department also chooses the day that the meeting will be held and is responsible for notifying its students. Gordon Mercer, professor of political science and faculty advisor of Pi Gamma Mu, said it was important to de-centralize the forum and distribute duties through a steering committee and the departments so more people could be involved. He said response from alumni has been favorable considering this is the first time such an event has been planned campus-wide. "Our hope is that alumni will share things with students that will help them become leaders in their field," Mercer said. Participating alumni receive $100 in travel expenses if they are needed and a certificate for participating.
