Sylva and Bryson City Pikes celebrate Zeta Xi Chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity celebrated its 13th birthday on February 12th. A formal banquet was held this past Saturday at the Court Hill Inn in honor of this occasion. Honorary guests were Chancellor H.F. Robinson and Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Dr. Glen Stiilion. Guest speaker this year was Athletic Director, Bob Waters (Pi Kappa Alpha initiate at Presbyterian College). Mr. Waters is also one of Zeta Xi's advisors. Pi Kappa Alpha became a dynamic part of the fraternity system here at Western when it was initially founded as Sigma Phi Kappa. This chapter was incorporated into the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity as the local colony. After a year of organization, evaluation, and much hard work, Sigma Phi Kappa was accepted and initiated into the National Organization on February 12,1967. During the years, members of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity have held many leadership positions on campus. Currently Richard Sullins is the Vice President on SGA and Duane McPherson is the comptroller in the same organization. Both are members of the fraternity. Also several seats on the Senate are held by Pikes. Pikes are also active in the campus media, primarily on The Western Carolinian. Rob Gathings is the paper's Business Manager. David Curtis is the Ad Salesman with Tim Thompson responsible for Circulation. Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity has a long standing tradition of participation in campus athletics. Currently there are members on three varsity teams, Phil Bonds on the Soccer Team, who was the 1978 MVP and All-Southern Conference; Mike Demateo on the Tennis Team; and Bill Kurdyck on the Golf Team. Young From Page 15. with 53 assists and a 4.0 scoring average, but it was a year of adjustment and learning for him. In an average of 15 minutes a game, he shot only 37% from the floor, and had some good games and some bad. But, the peak and valley season was good for him. "This season I've learned to accept my role as a point guard. I was a scorer in high school, but I've gotten used to the job I do here," Young says, adding, "I've learned to improve my shot selection also and I'm physically stronger than I was last season. That's helped my game a lot. Last summer Kevin built his body (and wallet) up by working as a loader for the UPS service near his home. Five days a week he loaded and unloaded the trucks and was constantly handling heavy and bulky packages and boxes. For him that work was as good as lifting weights. After the grind of the twenty-six game regular season he still has his strength. He's also fought off a nagging but recent knee injury and current problems with his foot. But, with the season reaching a frenzied peak with the first round of the tournament Saturday coming up, he'll keep on playing with the pain. Kevin, just like his teammates, is ready for Saturday's showdown with Appalachian State. First of all, they are Appalachian and secondly, and most importantly, a win Saturday earns the team a trip to Roanoke, VA, for the semi-Final round of the championship tournament. "Right now we're mad because we wanted second place (Marshall's win over The Citadel Monday night settled that issue)," Young says. "We didn't get that, but with the season we've had we want to keep on winning." The personable Hendersonville, NC native continues: "People now are looking to us to produce now—some are expecting it, but I love that pressure. I think pressure makes a player and it is a challenge that I enjoy," he adds. "This team's goal is the conference title and we know we can do it." With that kind of attitude it's no wonder he responds to a difficult job in difficult situations. "Kevin is our unsung hero," says Cottrell. "His job is to get the ball to the right people at the right time. He has a lot of responsibility and he's done well. Kevin is not blazing quick, like Larry, but he's sneaky quick and he can beat you. And the record shows that despite his lack of build-up this season he is a key to the young, freshman and sophomore laden team's success k,,"?'SrST,euk.y quick a" r'8ht' and ne's sneaky good. Most of all he s a tough and dependable competitor.
