The pair arc Involved in a five-year Ingersoll-Rand project to build and equip a factory for manufacturing equipment in Algeria. Their job will include teaching Algerians-in French -how to operate the plant when it's finished. Kenny and Harris are supervisor and trail respectively, in the welding and metal fabrication training section for the project, and their goal is to speak and comprehend spoken French, with enough know ledge ot grammar, vocabulary and verb lens be able to get along in French-speaking Algeria. Since the fall semester began, they have spent at leasi eight hours ever) da) attending FVench cla and drill sessions, watching French films and listening to French-lanquage tapes in WCU's language laboratory, lheir principal instructor has been Roger Bisson. WCl! associate professor of French. Last year at WCU Bisson pioneered a program of French instruction based on the intensive oral model of John Rassias at Dartmouth. A story about Bisson's program appeared in the Winslon-Salcm Journal, where il was seen by Ingersoll-Rand officials. Alter negotiating with Bisson, Ingersoll-Rand decided to send Kenny and Harris to WCU to try out the program. If the trial proves successful, additional Ingersoll-Rand employees may follow. Kenny and Harris arc past the four-week mark at WCU now, and Bisson said the two have come a long way in their knowledge of French. "They were both at ground zero when they came," he said. "Neither of them could speak a word. Despite some frustrations over the compound past tense and other oddities of the French language, Bisson said the two are apporachtng their goal. "We were at dinner recdhtly when I stopped to have a conversation with a native- French-speaking person. Later, they were able to recount many details of the conversation," he said. Kenny and Harris will continue their instruction using a more traditional approach after returning to Winston-Salem in.Ocotber.
