Some of you may have noticed thatthis if my first editorial of the semester. I, along with over 50% of the American population, have had the flu. This is probably the first time in my life that I have done something that 50% of other Americans are doing. It sucks to be a conformist! Anyway I apologize for the hiatus. Hopefully, it won't happen again this year. Each week we have a staff meeting up here to decide how many pages we will run the next week and other such decisions about production. I also ask the assodateeditors how their sections are going and how the people who work, for each section are doing. This week wegotsidetracked onto what the staff had heard from outsiders about the paper. There is an editing and design class that, apparently with great enthusiasm, rips and ridicules the paper to death every week. We hear from every comer of the campus how this wasn't covered this week and that wasn't covered last week. Why are the ads so different between LMPand all therest? Why didn't we get a professional to design the survey we're running for a few weeks? These are just a few of the comments that we are bombarded with on a weekly basis. After a while it gets hard to give a crap what is going on out there at all. Each week I know that maybeoneof fifty peoplewill have a positive comment to say about what we work on like fiends to get out by our deadline each week. We have less than one percent of thestudentpopulation working up here trying to put out a product that we feel will not only represent the other 99% but also please them in some way. So, we run surveys trying to find out what people would like, and few evenbother to respond. But, that's okay. Just remember, you've not only been given the chance to fill out a survey, but you also can voice your opinion by phone, through a letter to the editor or to our adviser. If you can't bother to let us know what's up, just keep it to yourself. As for the editing and design class (and other journalism classes too), why are you in a classroom complaining about what should be instead of up at this office working and learning your trade through hands-on experience? Since we only have the one percent of the students up here, it would also be nice if students were to call up and inform us of events and interesting happenings on campus. (We did not hear one Western Carolinian i i J Please fill out the following information and return it to the Western Carolinian by ■ ■ February 20. For the next 15 respondents, win a free T-shirt, if you include your name I I and phone number. Please check only one answer per question! People who ask if we'll run something seemsurprisedwhenwesay,"Yes! if it is about a student, we will!" Why is that? Thatisourdesire, our goal, our job. That is what we are here for. When people find out I am the editor, eventually they will end up saymgsometrunglike,"Youknow, I think it'd be pretty cool to see something in the paper about.." Before long they usually see whatever they were asking about. As for the last two items, LMP designs their own ads, and we didn'thaveaccess toa professional to design our survey. I hope that if any of you have any questions about it or don't understand one of the questions, that you will have the decency to call me and ask me what was meant instead of making rude, unfounded comments. I am also unsure why there is a need for underground newspapers. I think they can be cool, if the newspaper thatrepresentsthestu- dents is not meeting its goal. So far, I have read nothing in any of the undergrounds that could not Danell Moses Editor havebeenprintedintheWC. Now 1 hear that there are a few more that are going to start being published in the spring. What's the point? Why not voice your opinion in the newspaper, save your money and have something for your portfolio? Basically, it all boils down to the fact that we work our butts off just to be ridiculed. Do you think that if the one percent we do have weren't here that anyone else would do it? I don't think so. My only question is would it make a difference? To the ones of you who actually give a damn and to the staff, I would like to offer my sincere thanks and appreciation for your honesty and helpfulness. You are the ones who make all of our efforts worthwhile or at least bearable! To the others, if you want to make a difference work here, call us or shut up! Students, cont'd from 4 do not give respect. (This, by the way, is the point I do not always agree with). All I am asking is that the campus police and the support staff give me the same respect they would like if they were in my shoes. However, if they are in fact giving the respect that they would iike if they were in my shoes, something need to be done. The university needs to do some training that will teach these employees what respect is and how they should respect the customers they serve, namely the students. I think that the cafeteria might be doing some of this, because I see that the cafeteria staff seems more pleasant than ever before. I see a lot of smiles when I go there this semester. There are some offices that seem to really know what good customer service is. I feel like I get good treatment when I go to the student development office, housing and CAP Center. Maybe the Western Carolinian could run a*survey to see who the students feel is delivering good customer service. I think this would let the university know what departmenttheyneed tolookat. Another good part about this is that the university could be told that they are doing everything right, and that I am wrong. Whatever theoutcome,! think thateveryone wants to know.
