Stron gSIn 3winj ^ by Billy Graham Robert Baker and Phil Roberts finished fifth and seventh respectively to lead the Catamount men's Cross Country team to a stron sixth place finish in last Saturday's Georgia State Invitational. Clemson topped off the 27 squad field with thirty points. Alabama-Birmingham and Georgia followed with 113 and 117 point totals. The fqurth and fifth spots went to South Carolina and Georgia State, with both teams scoring 134 points. Western followed with a total of 163. Although the finish was impressive. Coach Dan Kenney was quick to express that the performance could have been better. "A faster run from our fourth through seventh runners could have improved our finish by three places," he said. Kenney entertained the possibility of first-meet jitters having been a problem. He added that a few of the runners have been ill with a strain of influenza which has been making the Cullowhee rounds. Baker and Roberts made mention of the toughness of the G.S.I, course being a major factor last Saturday. They agreed that difficulty added approximately a minute to each runner's time. Baker and Roberts finished firstan and second in last year's G.S.I., while running almost identical times as they ran this year. This shows the vast improvement of the G.S.I, field, which consisted of well over 150 runners. The Cat runners mentioned that the number of entrants caused problems, especially on the turns, many of which were 90 degrees and only two yards wide.. Kenney said that the defeat of strong teams such as UNCC and Vanderbilt was a boost to the team, but hopes for a more solid team finish in this weekend's Southern Conference meet at Davidson. The senior from East Flat Rock, North Carolina is the second WCU player to gain the conference's defensive player of the week award. Defensive end Louis Cooper received the honor for his performance against Davidson College, September 8. Greene, who holds the WCU record for blocked kicks in a season and career, intercepted three VMI passes, made six unassisted tackles and assisted on two others. His first interception came on VMI's first possession and put the Cats into position for their first score of the afternoon. His second came on a two-point conversion attempt after VMI had taken a 13-12 lead midway of the second quarter and proved to be critical later in the game. The third interception came with 50 seconds to play when VMI was trying to pull out a victory. The 6-0, 187 pound senior safety was a first-team All-Southern Conference selection last season, was named to the Associated Press I- AA All-America team, and was drafted by the Memphis Showboats of the United States Football League, but was granted a fifth-year of eligibility on the NCAA's new 20% freshman season participation rule.
