  • CATAMOUNT FOOTBALL BANQUET IS HELD THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Friday, March 11, 1960 Jim Smith Jim Smith, pictured above, won the individual foul shooting championship by hitting 44 out of 50 shots. John Biddix was runner-up with 38 completed shots out of 50. Elliott Wins New Title Vickie Elliott, WCC's woman athlete of the year in 1958-59 now has a new title to add to her list of achievements in the PE Department. She was recently crowned as the women's intramural badminton champion. She is a senior from Thomasville, N. C, and is doing her practice teaching at Gastonia this quarter. Her opponent in the tournament, Betty Westmoreland, had this to say about Elliott's badminton techniques: "She placed her birdie well, and," she added with a laugh, "she used pretty good strategy." WAA Elects New Officers The Women's Athletic Association met Monday night, March 7, in Breese Gymnasium at 7:30 for its monthly meeting. The primary business for the evening was to elect new officers to assume the duties of those who will be oft campus this quarter, doing practice teaching. Tewannah Bradley was elected to fulfill the duties o vice president, formerly held by Vickie Elliott. Doris Jones was succeeded as secretary-treasurer by Beverly Kling. Geneta Hopkins was elected reporter, following the resignation of Bev Kling. Next on the agenda for the evening was a discussion of a camping Westmoreland Wins Shuffleboard Championship Betty Westmoreland maintained her title as the woman's intramural shuffleboard champion by defeating Bev Kling in the two out of three game tournament on February 26. The sophomore PE and biology major hails from Marion, N. C, and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Westmoreland. When asked how she won the tournament, she laughed, brushed her left hand through her blaek curly hair and said, "Well, it's like this—the first game was a close one. I won it with a 10 that Bev didn't know was good. The final score was 33-30." "Bev won the second ga*ne," she continued. "She wrecked my score by knocking a 10 from my 20 BELK'S DEPT. Runner-up title'is held by Jean Hanen. GAIL ANDERSON COPS NEW TITLE Gail Anderson, basketball free throw champion, now has another tiara to add o her collection. On March 8, she was crowned as the accuracy throw champ. She used only 12 shots to hit the goal from strategic points on the court. Runner-up in the contest was Anna Mae Garland who had to make 16 attempts. Last year, Vickey Elliott led the coed athletes in the accuracy department of (the intramural program with 18 shots. Anderson, a sophomore P. E. major hails from Andrews, N. C points. I think it ended up 31-10. But the last game was mine. I knew I had a championship to defend, so I did—37-0." Bulletins According to Tewanah Bradley, women's intramurals director, award certificates are now being prepared for the members of each of the championship Williams, Cooper, Broadwater, Bass And Sisk Receive Awards By Nancy Harmon The annual Catamount football banquet was held Feb. 19th in the WCC cafeteria. Head Coach Dan Robinson was all smiles as he found great pleasure in presenting team awards. The victorious Catamounts wrapped up a 7-2-1 record last season in compiling the best gridiron slate WCC has seen in 10 years. Star tackle Denny Williams was presented with two team awards. Recognized as one of the mcst honored football players in the North State Conference, Williams won the acclaim of his teammates as well by being selected for the Best Blocking award and the Best Catamount Defensive Player. Talented Bob Cooper received the Most Valuable Player award in recognition of his outstanding efforts during the 1959 campaign. Combining for over 1000 offensive teams and the individual intramural champions. These awards will be presented to the Trojans for the field hockey and speed- ball titles, to the Rowdies for the volleyball championship, and to the Ridgerunners for the basketball crown. trip to the Chimneys in Gatlin- burg, Tenn. Suggested dates were April 9 and 10, but definite plans were not completed. Following the meeting, different activities were set up for the participation of the members. These activities included shuffleboard, basketball and practice on the trampolin. The Men's Intramural Program scheduled for spring quarter ha beeil announced. Softball has been chosen as the team sport. The teams will be divided into two leagues, the American League and the National League. A double elimination tournament is planned to determine the winner. Individual sports that are planned include a field day consisting of softball throw, broad jump, 100- yard dash, and other feats. Along with singles in horseshoes and tennis, a fishing derby is scheduled. He tied for the outstanding conference player and was placed on the all-state squad as well. Tom Broadwater was the recipient of the Most Improved Player award. This decision was based on his all round' offensive ability and his pass reception during the '59 reason when he caught a total of 23 passes. When the team voted for the Most Underrated Player, a tie was the result. Boogy Bass and Olen Sisk were the unanimous selection for- this valuable trophy. Dean of Men Dr. Howard Aldmon served as master of ceremonies at the banquet. A short musical program was presented by Dr. Edgar vom Lehn and Mr. Richard Trevarthan. Joe Crum delivered greetings to the same 200 attendants. Coach Tom Young recognized the athletic committee. Co-Captains Turner and Cooper introduced the squad. The cheerleaders were recognized by Mr. Dave Shuford. President Paul A. Reid, the speaker of the evening, made one of the most dynamic football speeches that has been heard in these hills in a long time. His subject dwelt on the value of an athletic program to the school, the individual, and the surrounding community. Eighteen Catamounts were presented letters to give WCC a strong experienced nucleus for next year's gridiron season. They were: Weist, Spady, Williams, Smith, Tanzillo, Grisbaum, Brown, Sisk, Elliott, Watkins, Jennings, Wilkes, Broadwater, Bass, Bryant, Scott, Childers, and Peterson. In addition to these, Cooper, Turner, and Autry, graduating seniors, received letters. Feast your eyes, friends. These two lovely, but veiled, lassies are this week's mystery coeds. Now you see them every day around the campus; so they shouldn't be too hard to identify. Try your hand arid call Ken Drury if you know who they are.
