Sherry Bradley Staff Reporter SGA senators passed a resolution during a senate meeting on Thursday, September 23, that will place change machines in WCU dormitories. "A total of five resolutions were presented to the senate," Beth Hughes, SGA secretary and chairperson for the committee on student affairs said. "The 'change machine' resolution passed, while four others were put to committees for further discussion." Two of the topics undergoing committee discussion are the establishment of an escort service and the implementation of a "carry-over" meal plan. When asked to explain the resolution process, SGA vice- president Brett Sander said, "Sena tors undertake the responsibility of finding out fromstudents what they need. They formalize a proposal and bring it before the senate." He further explained, "The proposals are discussed, voted on and either passed, tabled or put to committees." The SGA's next senate meeting will be Thursday, September 30, in the Catamount Room at the University Center. Student volunteers needed by Health Department Jennifer Hawkins StaffReporter Eleven years ago the Health Department began the volunteer program to pick up where the funds ran out. "The goal of the Jackson County Health Department's Volunteer Program is to increase thequan- tity and quality of public health services by assisting the Health Department employees in clinics, community programs/ projects, and as management support." (Jackson County Health Department Volunteer Services Brochure). It started with a mere handful of people and has only expanded and grown. Last year over 190 volunteers lent their services. Groups as well as individuals can volunteer. Several fraternities, sororities, extension homemakers and Jaycee's are some of the groups who have and are presently volunteering. The groups usually work in activities sponsored by the Health Department, such as the food festival. During the Food Festival, groups will go into the grocery stores and talk to customers abouthealthy heart snacks, pass out recipes and information and take blood pressure. Individuals are what usually come to mind when someone says,"volunteers." Individuals make up about two third? of the volunteer force at Jackson County Health Department. Students may get good work experience as a volunteer.
