  • Thursday, Dscember 5, 1968 APO Begins Fourth Year Of Service Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity was founded on Dec 16, 1929 at Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania. The late Frank Reed Horton was the founder. Alpha Phi Omega was founded on the Scout Oath and Law~a standard of manhood that would withstand the test of time and a code of ideals created and accepted by some of the greatest leaders the world has ever known. The purpose of this fraternity is to assemble college men to develop leadership, promote brotherhood, provide service to humanity, and to further the freedom that is our national educational ant- intellectual heritage. Alpha Phi Omega recognizes four fields of service. They are: Service to the campus and student body, service to the community, service to the nation, and service to the fraternity. Over 88,000 men have been in Alpha Phi Omega, but social events are the outgrowth of service projects. The Pi Delta chapter of APO has been on our campus four years. In February, 1965, fifty-five men gathered to form a chapter at WCU. On Nov. 16, 1965, the Gamma Lambda chapter of Clem son University initiated the Charter members into Pi Delta Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega. In the time APO has been at WCU many worthwhile service projects have been carried out. The Pi Delta Chapter sponsored "The APO Showcase of Talent" with all the proceeds given to the C.J. Harris Community Hospital. They are presently supporting a Korean Orphan. Other Projects include the Leukemia Drive, the Blood mobile , March of Dimes, and the Campsite Cleanup. Alpha Phi Omega, the fraternity of service, leadership, and friendship, is taking an active role on the campus of our University. APO Showcase Entries are now being accepted for the fourth annual A Phi 0 Showcase of Talent sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity. The entire proceeds this year will again be given to the U.S,0. Act descriptions should be received by November 26 or, if necessary, no later than December 6. The tentative audition date is January 8, 1969. Greek organizations and Faculty will be contacted separately. Orhri-b) THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Sigma Tau Accepted Nationally Alpha chapter of Sigma Tau Sigma Fraternity was founded Fob, 7, 1968 at Western Carolina University with fourteen brothers. Dr. Carl Dale Dona- than and Mr, Ed Gurley were initiated as advisor and sponsor, respectively, Mr. Frank J. S Maturo, who is primarily responsible for the Greek system on the Western Carolina campus today, contributed much time and effort toward establishing Sigma Tau Sigma as a local fraternity, Sigma Tau Sigma thus entered the highly competitive fraternity world, With a sue cessful spring rush, they were later allowed the first unrestricted rush in the history of the campus. Today Sigma Tau Sigma is competitive with other fraternities in intramural sports and other competitive functions on campus, Early in the history of the Page 13 Delta Sig Stresses Campus Leadership Miss Tamara E. Barrier Sweetheart Fraternity, they began correspondence with national fraternities, and recently have been accepted as a colony of Lambda Chi Alpha, one of the top five fraternities in the nation. After Feb. 7, 1969, Sigma Tau Sigma will be colonized and start working toward becoming a chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha at Western Carolina University. The local fraternity Gamma Tau was founded at WCU on Oct 8, 1957. Mr, Frank J. S. Maturo was the founding father Tau petitioned Delta Sigma Phi in April of 1959 and was char- ered as Delta Omicron Chapter on Dec. 6, 1959. It was the 89th chapter of Delta Sigma Phi in order of establishment The fraternity colors are Nile green and white and the fraternity flower is the white carnation. The national headquarters of Delta Sigma Phi is in Denver, Colorado. There are 108 chapters and 18 colonies throughout the United States and Canada. The national fraternity was founded on Dec. 10, 1899 at the College of the City of New York. Other early chapters included those at Columbia University, New York University, Pennsylvania State College, and Washington and Lee University. Delta Sigma Phi was founded on the principles of fraternity, education, loyalty, and chivalry. Bounded together by common interests and ritual, Delta Sigs everywhere strive for common goals of attainment Counting over 40,000 alumni, Delta Sigs have come to be among the most respected members of the Interfraternity world. Delta Sigma Phi is a twentieth century fraternity and has often taken the lead in shaping policy for the Interfraternity World. Striving to develop the individual as well as fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi has become known as the fraternity of "Engineered Leadership." The fraternity feels that this "Engineered Leadership" has been exemplified by the brothers of the last five years by having three student bodypres- idents. They were Bill Melton (1964), Paul Cabe (1966), and Roger Euliss (1968). The fraternity has also shown its leadership by having numerous brothers as members of the student senate, WesternCarolinian, Catamount, dorm counselors, and class officers. In the years past Delta Sig has also had many Brothers selected to Who's Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges . This years selections are: David Dingier, George Hood, and Tom Roberts. The past year, in support of the Carolinas Conference Tournament in Winston Salem, Delta Sigma Phi organized and executed a 235 mile "dribble- thon" from Cullowhee to Winston-Salem. On Monday at 12:00 Noon the Delta Sigs began dribbling non-stop to the Coliseum in Winston Salem, a- rriving on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. All 64 brothers and 17 pledges participated, and the event was given nation-wide coverage by UPI and AP. To round out the year in fine fashion, Delta Sigma Phi was awarded the "Most Outstanding Fraternity of the Year."
