Mixon...6We wanted to win' Ronnie Mixon, f sophomore from Middleton High in Charleston, S.C., made his debut as starting quarterback in Saturday's game against Virginia Military Institute. Mixon, who had only taken 21 snaps in his first year at WCU, was 18 for 32 in passing attempts and gained 262 yards in the air. He also led a drive down the field in the waning minutes of the ball game to set up the game-winning field goal. In an interview with the Western Carolinian, Mixon discussed the game and the upcoming season. Carolinian: "Did you feel any pressure before the game, with so much of the attention focused on you?" Mixon: "No, the pressure didn't bother me too bad, but I was worried because 1 hurt my back and shoulder, and that bothered me the whole game. But we just wanted to win, and I'm feeling a lot better now." Carolinian: "You came to Western from Middleton high in Charleston, S.C. How do you view your career there? Mixon: "Well, we were mostly a running team. We didn't throw much at all when I was a junior, because we had a real good tailback." Carolinian: "You saw limited action last year, taking only 21 snaps the entire season. How many passes did you throw last year?" Mixon: "I think 1 was one for two, something like that." Carolinian: "What do you feel qualified you to start at QB this year?" Mixon: "I threw the ball good in spring practice, that helped a lot. 1 also learned real quick at practice." Carolinian: "During the last drive that set up the game winning field goal, there was a 4th and 8 situation. What were you thinking of then?" Mixon: "The play we called had been working all night. Gerald broke open, and everything worked real good." Carolinian: "What is your appraisal of the team's overall performance?" Mixon: "it was our first game, we played good, but we've still got a long way to go. We can never quit trying." Carolinian: "Do you think VMI was as good a team as was expected of them?" Mixon: "Yes, they had a real tough defense. They only started 2 or 3 underclassmen. Tennessee Tech starts almost all seniors, but I think we'll do it against them too." Carolinian: "What compelled you to come to WCU in the first place? What did you like about the campus?" Mixon: "It's a real peaceful campus." Carolinian: "The QB's have to always stay and watch films. I usually watch films after class and have to find a time to study during the day, but usually have to study at night." Carolinian: "As an Industrial Tech major, what are your plans after graduation?" Mixon: "My dad is in drywall, so I would like to build houses or apartments." Carolinian: "What are your goals for this year?" Mixon: "We'd like to win the conference, that's the biggest one. We've got a lot of seniors,on the team, and I would like it to be a good year for them. I'd like to hook up with Gerald Harp as much as possible, since this is his last year." Carolinian: "Have you made any goals for your career here?" Mixon: "I'd like to be in the top ten in the nation passing one year and 1 would like to win the Southern Conference the rest of my years here. We can do it." Carolinian: "Following in the footsteps of Mike Pussey, have you given any thoughts about making a run at any of his records?" Mixon: "I'm not worried about breaking any records. As long as we win everything's fine. I want to win." Carolinian: "You threw for over 260 yards Saturday night. Were you surprised?" Mixon: "I really had a good night, but I've still got a long way to go, and lots to work on. But the win was good, it helped build up our confidence. The team believes in me now, but I think they always did." Carolinian: "The fan reaction was really intense during the game. What did you think of all the enthusiasm?" Mixon: "I really liked the fan reaction. There were lots of people there, it really surprised me. If they keep on backing us, we'll win. We're really gonna try our best." Carolinian: "What do you think the team's prospects are for this year?" Mixon: "I feel like we can beat anybody, if everybody does their best. We can't walk over everybody, but we can win." Carolinian: "What parts of the team did you feel stood out?" Mixon: "The offensive line did a real good job, I have to give them credit for that. And we've got the best bunch of receivers anywhere. They really made me lood good a lot of times." Carolinian: "What do you think of the job Coach Waters did with the team?" Mixon: "He planned for a lot of stunts, and they moved around a lot defense, but we picked it up good, and everything worked out O.K." Good morning once again Cullowhee. It looks like we'll get to sleep before sunrise this week. Next week we should have a new typesetting machine which will improve the Western Carolinian's design and streamline our production. Hopefully we can run a larger newspaper each week. Until next week... 16 'Western Carolinian September 11. 1980
