  • Entertainment The Western Carolinian Page 8 Thursday, September 15,1988 The New Pub Opens: Entertainment by Marty Putz by Frederick Mason On Thursday, September 8th, the audience at the pub on the second floor of the University Center was entertained by Last Minute Productions via dance, music, food, drinks, and Marty Putz. I went there to see if I would be amused, and as it turned out I was very much amused. The music was provided by Dance LTD and kept the audience dancing until the star attraction appeared. On a scale of one to ten, I must give Marty Putz a ten. From the time he began his routine until he took his bow he performed witha style all his own. His innovative trinkets he used were interesting and funny to the audience and kept us laughing non-stop. I liked the way he got the audience involved in some of his gags, like having people throw raarshmal- lows at him while he tried to catch them in his mouth. There was also the catapulted cat in which one person from the audience wore a butterfly E(gd4© EMAIL Freddy Kruger Strikes Again (A movie review) CALENDAR FOR EDUCATION MAJORS FALL SEMESTER, 1988 Monday, Septemberl2,4:00 p.m., K 112 - Studcr Teachers for Spring Semester, 1989 will meet. He demonstrated his professionalism well as he deflected remarks easily from hecklers in the audience. Marty putz seems like the kind of person you feel like you know, much like one of your close friends who tells all the funny jokes. Perhaps it is because of this talent that the audience got along well with him, and he with us. Besides the act, the pub itself was excellent, both service and atmosphere. With more pub nights coming up on later dates, it would certainly be to your advantage to dance a little, socialize a little, and have alot of fun. As Marty Putz said, "It's the coolest." by Anna Henricks Freddy is at it again kiddo's. "Want some candy little girl?" Freddy Kruger has returned in full form right from his razor-like fingernails down to his chest of screaming children. Freddy has defeated those nasty Elm Street Children again and returned from the dead. The "Dream Warriors" didn't finish him off like they thought and Freddy has come back to kill them and a few others. The special effects in this movie were pretty good. The Elm Street movies have all had good special effects but in the beginning of the movie, Freddy literally pulled himself together and added flesh to his bones. It was unlike any of the other movies; gory with all the grisly details. Unlike other sequel horror movies like Friday the 13 and Halloween, reference to the first three movies are made and it can be hard to understand this one if you haven't seen the other three Elm Street movies. Kristy.of Elm Street two and three fame, is the central character in this movie as she is the last "Elm Street" child alive. Freddy is not as terrifying this time around. He kills too quickly and doesn't have the intricate details involved as with the drug addict from Dream Warriors . Freddy has changed approaches. He throws puns around like he does children. "Wanna suck face?" he leers in one girl's dream and proceeds to inhale her soul. Freddy's various plays-on- words are sprinkled all through the movie and he seems to have gained strength with his new found wit. 'His powers have grown in the children's dreams. He uses his humor to change dreams into deja vu. Maybe Fred's getting bored or the series is wearing out its welcome. Let's hope Fred doesn't follow in Jason's and Michael's footsteps. Enjoy a Trip to the Lake With LMP by Holly Wheatley Entertainment Editor On September 18, the Outdoor Adventure program sponsored by LMP invites you to enjoy a day of swimming and canoeing at one of Jackson County's beautiful mountain lakes. You can even learn to kayak. LMP will provide canoe/kayak instructors, boats and equipment. They will also have a cookout, so you don't have to worry about dinner. Take advantage of this great opportunity to meet new friends, swim, go boating, catch those end of summer rays, and have a cookout by the lake. The group will leave from the UC at 1:00 p.m. and return after dinner. The outing is free to WCU students and $5.00 for faculty/staff, which includes transportation, equipment, instruction and food. Young Guns, An Excellent Western by Colin Burch In a day and age where Westerns rarely come to the screen, it takes the right stuff for a cowboy movie to make it big. Young Guns has it. Recently we've seen rich tales of revenge in the Old West, such as Silverado and Pale Rider . Put Young Guns a notch above these two. It has elements that will appeal to even those who are not big fans of Westerns. Granted the beginning is a litte slow, bear with it-it does set a descriptive background for which the action of the movie is set against. Though Emilio Este- vez plays Billy the Kid, and though some of the movie is centered around the historical charactor, this is not another Billy the Kid movie. Young Guns is more about a group of young men. They all come together under a middle-aged business man who has taken them under his wing by giving them a place to stay, a job, and trying to give them an education. When this father- figure is killed by his scandalous business competitor, the boys are ready to take the war path. The sheriff in the nearest town figures he can use their anger to catch the man responsible for the death, so he deputies them. But instead of merely finding the man and bringing QUIN Theatres 586-5918 When he pours, he reigns. TOUCHSTONE TOM CRUISE o&": 7 & 9:10 7 & 9MO It's like a beautiful summer daydream you hate to see end." RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS him to the law, they begin killing everyone that gets in their way as Charles Sheen and Emilio Estevez argue over who's the leader. But as they are out to kill, they grow close together and develop a kind of brotherhood, so the film is more than blowing holes in people. The bond between them is touching. The movie puts forth one excellent acting by young stars Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Charles Sheen, and Lou Diamond Phillips as well as their lesser-known co- stars Dermot Mulroney and Casey Siemaszko. Estevez is cocky, witty and crazy. Sutherland's character (an awful but sincere young poet) is much more passionate and deep than his character was in The Lost Boys. Phillips takes on a much different role than he had in La Bamba as he portrays a mystical Indian. Don't wait for the tape on this one-Go see it! BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THIS GUY IS IN CLASS.
