  • PAGE 6/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/July24,1980 To manage athletic business MacDonnell named to new post at WCU A high-level official at WCU has been named to a new position with responsibility for business, promotions, sales and marketing functions of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Hugh W. MacDonell, director of financial services in the WCU Office for Business Affairs, is taking the new post, described by WCU chancellor Dr. H. F. Robinson as a "major commitment to the further advancement of our athletics programs." MacDonell, who jajped Western's business affairs staff in 1976, will be director of athletic business services in his new position. Athletic Director Robert L. Waters said expansion of the varsity athletic program this year to 17 intercollegiate sports, and the increasing complexity of athletics budgeting and promotions require the fulltime services Plant thieves get 12 months Two Sylva men pleaded guilty in District Court Thursday, July 17, of stealing rhododendron and azalea plants from the WCU campus. Thomas Chioma, identified as the operator of the Red Horse Restaurant in Sylva, was sentenced to 12 to 15 months in prison for theft of state property. The plants were reportedly recovered from the grounds of the Red Horse Restaurant. Also convicted was David R. Blood who was sentenced to 9 to 12 months on the same charge. Both men gave notice of appeal to Superior Court and bond was set by Judge Charles McDaris at $1,000 each. Judge McDaris in passing sentence termed the theft a "dastardly crime.'' The case was investigated by Pritchard Smith, WCU director of traffic security, and Charles R. Hess of the State Bureau of Investigation. The investigation began May 19 when it was discovered that six rhododendron and five azalea plants had been stolen from the campus the previous night. A major objective in the new business management arrangement, Waters said, will be to assure that Whitmire Stadium's 12,000 seats are filled for home football games. Financially successful operations are increasingly important, Waters said, for an institution competing at major conference and NCAA Division 1 levels. In the new post, MacDonell will assist Waters in budget preparations, financial statements, making recommendations for major equipment purchases for all intercollegiate athletics, and in arranging and planning marketing, program and advertising sales, ticket sales and promotions for athletic events. MacDonell also will work with the university development office in fund-raising activities for support of the athletics program. MacDonell holds the master of business administration degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and has done advanced graduate study beyond the master's. He was assistant dean of administration at the Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh before coming to Western. He also has practiced in a certifies public accounting firm in management services; been on the staffs of Carnegie Mellon University and Delta State College; held executive posts in private business and for four years was an air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Agency. A major in the U.S. Air Force, MacDonell is married and has four children.
