  • PAGE 4/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/APRIL 5, 1979 Cats are in the thick of race Coach Haywood hopes pitchers will mature Western Carolina's baseball team is in the thick ot the race, but Coach Bill Haywood is still waiting for a couple of young pitchers to mature for the gruelling Southern Conference pennant chase that heats up this week. "We've got a shot at it." sa\s Haywood ol his team\ chances for tile championship "But." he quickly adds. "we must find at least one more effective starting pitcher this week to stay in the race." The Catamounts are 2-1 in the conference (8 8 overall) with a win over Furman and a split with Ihe Citadel, but have the toughest schedule remaining ol .ins of tile conference teams as thev must play tint league games in the coming three week period. East Tennessee State currently leads the standings with a 4-1 record followed bv The Citadel (<>-2), Furman (5-2), WCU (2-1), Appalachian State (3-2), UT/Chat tanooga (5-5), Marshall (2-2), Davidson (1-5) and VMI (0-6). Rick Adair is one of the conference's top pitchers, but he is the only bright spot on Haywood's mound staff at present. The junior lefthander shows a 4-1 record and 1.69 ERA. He threw a no-hitter at The Citadel and heal Furman, 4-1, in his two outings last week. However, the best earned run average among the other eight pitchers on the WCU staff is freshman Steve Chamlee's 4.66. "With the exception of Rick, our pitching staff is inexperienced. They gain a little more experience and knowledge with each game, but they are playing like most kids their age—up and down like a yo-yo," explains Haywood. Three freshmen—Chamlee, Lee Nance and Randy Sims— have shown Hashes of promise. Sophomore Wayne Harwell. 2-0, developed an inflammation of his pitching shoulder and missed his starts against I lie Citadel and Clemson last week and his status for this week is questionable. In addition, junior Jerry Warren (1-2) is still nursing an injury sustained last week when he was hit by a line drive. "Our hitting has been adequate, but pitching and mental errors have cost us five games," noted Haywood. The Cats are leading the Southern Conference in hitting (.301) and have five batters hitting over .350. Shortstop Billy Boyd, who has hit safely in 15 of 16 games, tops the averages with a .413 mark. Jim Reinicker is hitting .412, but has missed half of the Cats game with an injury and virus. Senior third baseman David Ball is hitting at a .411 clip followed by junior Willie Carpenter (.362) and senior Mark Reeser (.351). Senior Freddy Brown is one of the league's leading power hitters and has knocked in 15 runs. The Cats are scheduled to meet Appalachian State today at Ronnie G. Childress Field. UT/Chattanooga will visit for a doubleheader Saturday. Next week, Haywood's team meets Carson- Newman on the road Monday; Furman at home Tuesday; Carson-Newman at home Wednesday; and Mars Hill at home Thursday. Recruits hit 27 WCU's football recruit list reached twenty-seven with the recent addition of five more high school signees. The latest additions are quarterbacks Chuck Barrett of Newman, Ga. and Ronnie Mixon of Charleston, SC and offensive linemen Mark Bicknese of Stone Mountain, GA; Ron Fines of Clearwater, FLA and Lanier Parham of Swainsboro, GA. Barrett, 6-2, 195, quarterbacked Newnan High to a sub-region championship last season and averaged over 40 yards per kick as a punter, tops in his region. He scored ten times last fall and was his team's most valuable player. Mixon, 6-1. 180, was outstanding in the South Carolina North-South All-Star game. He is an extremely versatile performer and led his team (Middleton High) to a district championship last season. Bicknese, 6-5, 210. was rated one of Georgia's top ten linemen while playing defensive end for Clarkston High. He is tentatively scheduled for offensive line duty- next fall. Fines, 6-3, 245, was named to numerous all-star teams after playing a key role in Clearwater High's district championship. Practice results to be revealed The results of four weeks of off-season practice will be revealed Friday evening when WCU holds its annual Purple-White Spring Football Game. The intra-squad scrimmage will get underway at 7:30 p.m. in Whitmire Stadium. The game is open to the general public. A draft of the available 72 players was held yesterday afternoon for the purpose of equalizing the talent on the two teams. Several returning starters from last season's team will not see action in the intra-squad scrimmage for various reasons, such as injuries and participation in spring sports. However, head coach Bob Waters is expecting a "competitive and spirited scrimmage." "Wc have a lot of young players fighting for higher positions on the depth chart and several spots are still up lor grabs." he explains. The play of the Catamounts defensive unit has been the highlight of the spring session. "Defense has been our strong point this spring," says Waters. "We have more experience, depth and size than we had on defense last fall," he adds. Western is scheduled to return ten starters from among 19 lettermen off a defensive unit that was ranked second best in the Southern Conference last season. Waters noted the defensive performances of end Mike Brownlee (6-2, 210, Sr.), linebacker Ricky Smith (6-0, 210, Jr.), tackle Larry McClain (6-3, 225, Jr.) and backs Teddy Phillips (5-7, 170, Jr.) and Lee McCall (5-9, 165, Sr.) as impressive this spring. Three starting defensive backs from last season—Willie Wells, Thomas Gunn and Willie Carpenter—have missed spring drills. The offense, according to Waters, is behind the defensive unit this spring, due largely to the rebuilding process in the offensive line and the absence of some key players. "We have been spending a great deal of time with our young offensive players on basic techniques," he says. "Our top priority this spring was to improve our running game," says Waters. "We still have a lot of work to do in this area before we open the season in September," he notes. Linemen Joel Potts (6-2,220, Jr.) and Vernon Greene (6-1, 205, Jr) and quarterback Kent Briggs (6-3, 195, Sr.) have been the bright spots on the offensive side. Three veteran performers on the Cats offensive line were seniors last fall and two tight ends, Tim Hassard (6-3,220, So) and Grady Prevette (6-2, 205, Jr.) have missed much of spring practice with knee injuries. In addition, Western's record setting passing combo of senior quarterback Mike Pusey and junior Gerald Harp have missed all of the off-season drills. Broccoli Gnetl Beans Carratt Applesauce Bread.
