  • The Western Carolinian 11 Thursday, February 12,1987 BASKETBALL substitute for Spotlight Walker, got the ball to Hutchison, who threw up the 12- footer. Donaldson had hit a three-pointer with about four minutes to go to give the Buns a 55-54 lead. Tipton rebounded a Hill missed shot on a three-on-one break and scored with 2:40 left to put the Cats back up, 56-55 and Donaldson followed with two free throws (on Hill's first "touch foul") at the 1:53 mark to give East Tennessee a 57-56 advantage. A short jumper by Tipton put Western ahead, 58- 57, with 46 seconds left. "I was very pleased with our zone defenses," Cottrell said. "We were working so wen ana were matched up well. Then we got that foul at the end, and their best shooter drilled both of those shots. We just couldn't come up with that final basket. "We're not excited about being in last place in the Southern Conference, but when you're doing the best you can do, there's no disgrace." Neither Gault, who had 10 points, nor Walker was 100 percent healthy. Cottrell was pleased with each's play, Edwin Carlton Photo however, and said Gault played "22 or 23 minutes of great basketball." Despite losing, the Catamounts should be thankful to the Bucs. The Bucs are on NCAA probation this year, and the school declared inself ineligible for the Southern Conference tournament, Feb. 27-28 and March 1 in Ashevilie. Because the Bucs won't be in postseason action, the Catamounts are assured of making rhetoumament, even if they finish in last place. Heading into tonight's game they are in last place with a 2-11 league mark (5-17 overall). It will be the first losing season and the first sub-.500 finish for the Catamounts since Cottrell's first year, 1977-78. The schedule doesn't get easier after tonight. Western travels to Huntington, W. Va., for a Saturday afternoon game with Marshall (17-4), the conference leader. The Thundering Herd owns the nation's longest winning streak, at 13 games after a 96-92 victory Monday over The Citadel, and hasn't lost a conference game in 11 tries this year. Western fell to Marshall, 74-69, here on Jan. 26. The Cats will play Virginia Military (8- 13) on Monday night in Lexington, Va. VMI defeated the Cats, 65-56, here Jan. 24. Western's next home game will be Monday, Feb. 23, against Ferrum. PRICES EFPFCTIVE THRU SAT., FEB 14,1987 AT A&P IN SYLVA WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIMIT QUANTITIES.
