  • NEWS SGA SECURES MICROWAVES FOR STUDENTS In an attempt to take immediate action on its campaign platform, the Student Government Association announced Wednesday, one of several cafeteria changes. Prompted by last year's student feedback, Todd Davis, 1985-1986 SGA President petitioned the administration to purchase four microwave ovens to be placed in the cafeterias for the students' use. Because the Student Food Service Advisory Committee did not meet during the summer, the idea was channeled through Dr. Glenn Stillion, Vice Chancellor of Student Development, and then Dr. C. J. Carter, Vice Chancellor, Business Affairs. With their approval, the improvement was then passed on to the key administrators. In a coordinated effort by Mr. John McCracken, Director of Auxiliary Services, Business Affairs, and Mr. Cecil Ward, Director of Food Services, the office of Student Government was successful in voicing the need for such improvements. Davis was pleased and appreciative of the cooperation that the administrative officials gave in reaching this early goal. With the new appliances come operating proceedures that must be followed in order to keep the microwaves operating. (1) Absolutely no metal is to be put in the microwave (2) Do not heat food for more than 15 sees, at a time (3) If you make a mess, please clean it up or report it to the cafeteria staff. By following these guidelines, the use of the appliances can be prolonged. In closing, Davis expressed his hopes that the student body would continue to voice their opinions to the Senate and other representative groups. "Without the voice of the student," Davis said, "the course of the SGA would be unsure." By expressing a viewpoint, SGA can work for the student in the way the student wants, thus being more effective. SGA is still following up on other suggestions of how to improve the cafeteria system. Because of the structure of the food services system, changes of a large scale will take time, but they are possible. MEMORIALSERVICE TO BE HELD FOR DR CONSTANCE HEAD On June 30, 1985, Dr. Constance Head, professor of history and religion at WCU, died in her Cullowhee home. Dr. Head had been ill for several years, forced to finally leave her teaching duties in mid-fall of 1984. Her loss then and now is a significant loss to the entire university community. A scholar of Byzantine and Old Testament history, Dr. Head's lectures were always animated, inspiring, and precise. She displayed to her colleaguesand students a great love for scholarly pursuit and fastidious organization. Many students would sign up for her classes, not necessarily to fulfill a requirement, but to experience her as a teacher. When she could not finish that lastfall semester, several students stopped attending the class, seeing no reason to continue with another instructor. Keeping tabs on attendance even from her sickbed, she personally telephoned these students to reprimand them for their slack attendance. After explaining their justification, her attitude soon changed. A memorial service for Dr. Head was held Sunday, July 7, at Beth Ha' Tephila Synagogue in Asheville. Other members of the congregation and Mrs. Jean Nienhuis spoke in rememberance of Dr. Head. She was described by all as talented and a perfectionist, constantly seeking the best from herself and those around her. Mrs. Nienhuis characterized her as a great friend, but always a private person. Constance Head was the author of many published works. These works reflected her various interests, especially her interest in the Old Testament, Byzantine history and John Wilkes Booth. Her Biblical novel Ahaz, received first prize at the Southeastern Regional Writers' Conference in 1977. Her first book, Justinian II of Byzantine, was published in 1972. At the time of < publication, her publisher stated that Dr. Head combined "a free- flowing style with meticulous scholarship." The Emperor Julian and Imperial Twilight were published in the mid-seventies, followed by Ahaz in 1979. Shortly before her death, her latest manuscript Isiah: Prince of Prophets was accepted for publication by Tyndale House. It will be released in 1986. She completed this manuscript during the final stages of her illness. During this phase she was also bringing together her research on John Wilkes Booth. Through the years she compiled a great deal of information on Booth, which she wanted to someday present in book form. According to Jeanne Nienhuis, these notes and files have been turned over to a colleague of Dr. Head's who will follow-up on her research. The rest of Dr. Head's papers will be turned over to Clemson University. Born in 1939, Constance Head graduated from Milan High School, Milan, Tennessee, in 1955. Throughout her childhood her scholastic interests were greatly encouraged by her mother Ruby Mae, a school teacher. Dr. Head went on to receive a bachelor's and master's degree atTrinity University, and another master's degree plus her doctoral degree at Duke University. Commenting on her college career Dr. Head once said, "All I did was study." She joined the faculty at Western in 1967. She was named professor emeritus in 1985. She was very pleased to receive this recognition before her death. Besides her gift for writing, Dr. Head was involved with dramatics, painting, and various other crafts. In 1982 an original musical, Little Theo, written by Dr. Head, was performed at WCU featuring members of the theatre department. Dr. Head constructed a model of King Solomon's Temple, which she was very willing to lecture about to interested groups. She recently donated this to her own synagogue, Beth Ha' Tephila. She was completely responsible for the restoration of her house, which she purchased and saved from destruction. The Cullowhee community will certainly miss the presence of this energetic, multi-faceted woman and teacher. Dr. Constance Head A memorial service will be held Friday, September 6, for Dr. Constance Head, a professor of history and religion at Western Carolina University who died June 30. The memorial program will begin at 2 p.m. in the recital hall of the Music-English Building on the WCU campus. Dr. Head specialized in Byzantine and Biblical studies and was the author of numerous books and articles as well as two novels, the second of which will be published posthumously. Her many hobbies included theatre, art, and crafts. Tributes will be offered by Dr. Clifford Lovin and Dr. Gordon McKinney ofthe history faculty, Dr. Michael Jones of the philosophy and religion faculty, Dr. Kathleen Sandquist of the speech and theatre arts faculty, former students Mercedith Bacon and Barbara Rosenthal, and Dr. Asher Marks, rabbi.
