Originally from Florida, Mitchell has attended the Philadelphia Orchestra. Charles Smith, the Trio's drummer, has studied at Columbia University. While on a tour of Russia with the Yale University Russian Choir, the Trio entered Tchaikovsky Conservatory where they did an impromptu jazz concert. Their music was received with great enthusiasm, although at that time the Soviet government had placed a ban on jazz and their work received no mention in the newspapers. The Trio, together for about 15 to 20 years, owns a nightclub, The Playback, in New Haven, Connecticut, where they play whenever they are in the area. They returned < "om Hawaii Tuesday to start a tour of 17 Southeastern colleges and universities, including stops at Louisiana State University, Florida State University, and Western Carolina College. To gain admission, students should present ID cards; adult's price is $1.50 and children's admission is 50c. The show will be held in Reid Gymnasium. On Tuesday, April 7, elections for the offices of President and Vice-President of the Student Body will be held in front of the first floor lobby of Stillwell Building. In the event of rain the polls will be located in the first floor lobby of Stillwell. The polls will open at 9:00 and close at 3:00 in the afternoon. Those seeking the office of President of the Student Body are Ellison C. Magruder and Bill Melton. For the office of Vice- President the candidates include the President of the Student Body should be the spokesman for the entire student body. He should stand, in every instance, for whatever he and the students he represents believe in. "I think it's time for a change in student government, a big change. It's time student government began to do something constructive, to recognize its potential, and to make use of its recognized authority. I'd like to see this happen next year. I think it can. I intend to ask Mme. Graves French Club's Guest Wed. Madame Georgette Harbour- din Graves, a French foreign exchange teacher, will speak on "Social Customs in Modern France" next Wednesday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m., in the Faculty Lounge of Hunter Library. Her lecture is being sponsored by the WCC French Club and is open to the public. Madame Graves is one of twenty French teachers sponsored in this country by the exchange-teacher program of the Commission Franco-Americaine. A graduate of the Universite de Lille, she is presently teaching in the school system of Spartanburg, S. C. She plans to settle in the United States after a short return visit to France when she completes her assignment in Spartanburg. Following Madame Graves' talk, the French Club will hold a reception in her honor open to club members and faculty guests. Ellison Magruder Betty Sprung, William B. A. Culp, Jr. and Steve George. Ellison Magruder is a rising Senior from Highlands, N. C. Magruder, born in Miami, Florida, is 32 years old and a graduate of Miami Technical High School. At WCC he has served as Vice-President of TKE Fraternity, and Vice-President of the Student Body. He is a Social Science Major. Concerning the elections Magruder stated, "I think in the past most platforms were based around getting more representation in the Student Senate. I feel the Student Senate, as it now stands, is representative of the Student Body. My thoughts are based around the best interest and problems of the students along with the improvement of their academic opportunities. As long as I keep the thoughts of the best interests of the students first I can plan accordingly in the coming year." Bill Melton is a Junior from Rockingham, N. C. Melton, age 22, was born in Wadesboro, N. C, and is a graduate of Rockingham High School. As a student at WCC, Melton is a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, the Radio Club, YDC, and SAM. He is also a dormitory counselor and a full-time announcer for radio station WMSJ in Sylva. His majors are Business Administration and Social Science. In reference to the elections, Melton said, "I feel that Bill Melton every student to help me make this a reality." Betty Sprung is a rising Senior from Murphy, N. C. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, is 20 years old and a graduate of Murphy High School. As a student at WCC Miss Sprung is serving as News Editor of the Western Carolinian, Secretary of the Newman Club, Secretary of the Debate Club and Varsity Debate Team member, Secretary and Reporter of YRC, Publicity Director of the Nomad, and is Reporter-elect of Alpha Phi Sigma National Honorary Scholastic Fraternity. She is majoring in Math and English. Concerning her candidacy for Vice- President, Miss Sprung stated, "I am not rash enough to presume it is time for this predominately male campus to have a co-ed Student Body President, but I feel that on the basis of enrollment percentage that WCC is ready for female influence in the executive branch of the Student Government. I feel that the duty of the Student Government is to represent ALL the students on campus and I want to serve the students of WCC in obtaining fairer representation in the Student Government, especially the Day Students, Freshmen, and Co-eds, who make up large groups on the campus and yet seen to receive the least representation." —Continued on page 8
