  • March 28,1996 Western Carolinian Features Ethiopian Student Reflects Upon Experiences at WCU by Bryan Sharpe Contributing Writer Simret Kebede is a unique Western student. Most at WCU were born in the USA and have lived here all their lives. Kebede's unique because she has lived in a total of five countries, including Ethiopia, her home country. "I moved to the US over seven years ago," said Kebede. "My dad found a job in the US and that is what brought me over here." Before residing in the US, Kebede lived in Tanzania, Botwana and Kenya. She is fluent in three languages: Amharic (spoken in Ethiopia), Swahili (mainly spoken in eastern Africa) and English. "I was already pretty much prepared for the culture-shock of the US because I had already lived in three other countries," said Kebede. "By living in three other countries prior to the US, I was already exposed to meeting new people who all spoke different languages and that helped me out a lot." Kebede graduated from Durham High School in 1989, then went through Durham Technical Community College's one-year program. She then worked at Duke Medical Center for a year before enrolling at WCU in the fall of 1992. Kebede is a senior and is studying nutrition. She plans on graduating this May. "WCU has an outstanding nutrition department," said Kebede. "I feel that I will be able to get a job pretty easily because of my education at Western." Kebede is part of the WCU International Club, which is sponsoring the annual International Festival on Thursday, April 11. There are some similarities between the U.S. and Ethiopia, such as the school systems in the two countries. "The school systems are very much a like," said Kebede. "The schools go first through 12th grades in both countries." Kebede commented en which school system was more difficult. "I think the schools in Ethiopia are probably more difficult. For instance, I took a class while in college that I had already taken when I was in the eighth grade in Ethiopia," said Kebede. "The main reason I decided to come to Western was because of the location of the school," said Kebede. "It is just so pretty here. Another reason why I chose Western was because everyone was just so friendly at Orientation. That was the main reason." Kebede plans to join the Peace Corps in May. She will work in the Peace Corps for two years. "I will be working on the small island of Sri Lanka, which is located below India," said Kebede. "This will allow me to do what I like to do best, which is travel and to help people." Kebede will then attend a graduate school, although she is unsure of which school she will attend. "I had a great time here at Western and I made so many good friends," said Kebede. "I also enjoyed watching the WCU basketball games. They did a really good job. I became a big fan!"
