  • Sports Western Carolinian/October 25, 1984 NCAA Cats Square Off Against Furman THE GAME: Western Carolina University's Catamounts (5-3 overall; 2-2 Southern Conference) travel to Greenville, South Carolina, to meet Furman University's Paladins (5-2 overall; 2-2 Southern Conference) in a key Southern Conlerence game. THE SITE: Paladin Stadium (13.200) on the Furman University campus in Greenville, South Carolina. Natural Playing field. KICKOFF TIME: 1:30 p.m. (EDT) RADIO: I he Catamount Sports Network with Stan Pamfilis doing the play-by-play and Steve White providing the color will air the game throughout Western North Carolina and upper South Carolina via WRGC in Sylva, WK1T FM in Hendersonville; WHCC in Waynesville, WRFR-FM in Franklin, WBHN in Bryson City, WKRK in Murphy and WTYN in Try on. THE SERIES: Furman leads the series, 7-2-2, that began in 1971. Prior to last season's 14-7 victory in the NCAA IAA championship semifinal played in Greenville. Western Carolina had not beaten Furman since joining the Southern Conference in 1977. On games played between the schools on Furman's home fields (Sirrine Stadium and Paladin Stadium), Furman owns a 4-1-1 record. In the last foui games played in the series, the largest margin of victory has been seven points. In the regular season game played in Cullowhee on October 15, the Catamounts took a 17-0 lead in the second quarter only to have Furman rally and tie the game on Kevin Esval's short field goal with 0:27 to play. That marked the eighth consecutive game in the series that WCU had failed to beat Furman. Jeff Gilbert passed 233 yards in the game, hitting Eric Rasheed seven times for 81 yards, and tailback Leonard Williams rushed for 85 yards and 2 TDs. Tailback Stanford Jennings led Furman with 102 yards rushing and David Charpia passed for 185 yards. 3 yards) In the NCAA 1 AA championship semifinal game played in Greenvile on December 10. the Catamounts took a 6-0 lead into halftime on a pan ol Dean Biasucci field goals, but the Paladins look the lead in the third quarter on a two-yard run by Dennis Williams after an interception at the WCL 30. Western regained the lead late in the fourth quarter on Mclvin Dorsey's four-yard run and then held off the Paladins on a pair of interceptions and a recovered tumble ol a punt. Dorsey rushed for 102 yards and Gilbert passed for 202 yards while WCU's defense held Furman to 18 net rushing yards including nine tackles for losses. 8" 1 cv\ <00 3 CO o Photo by Mark Haskett The "sack-pack" tandem of Louis Cooper (#81) and Clyde Simmons (#96) celebrate another tackle in the backfield. The two have teamed up for 16 quarterback sacks and 21 tackles for losses totalling HI yards. Cooper and Simmons, along with the entire defensive unit will be counted on to put a stop to Furman's powerful offense. However, several Catamounts will miss the Furman game with injuries: linebacker RICKY PA I 1 (knee), mover BERNARD JONES (ankle), offensive guard MM Hill (ankle) and defensive tackle JIM LUTHER (knee), all starters, and defensive tackle KIRK WOODS and defensive back SCOII MCADAMS, both pe serves. Ol I I NSI S. Western Carolina operates trom multiple I formation. The Catamounts are averaging 1M yards per game (138 lushing. 226 passing). Furman's basic offense is the 1 and is averaging 406 yards a game, tops in the Southern Conference. Ihe Paladins are averaging 159 rushing and 168 passing.
