  • People The Western Carolinian Page 5 Thursday, October 1,1987 LE CLUB FRANCAIS Le Club Francois held its first meeting of the school year on Thursday, September 24 in Room 107McKee. Dr. Lewis Sutton, advisor to the Club, presented a slate of officers for consideration. Members elected were Stanton Procter (President), Deborah Barnard (Vice President), Gayle Celestin (Secretary), Ellen Crigar (Treasurer) and Albie Pabon (Information Officer). The group plans to have a softball game against the Spanish language students on October 3, at 10:15 a.m. on the intramural field behind Reid Gym. A picnic is scheduled to follow the game. Other plans include engaging singer Phil Stoval, a visiting artist at Southwestern Technical College, to sing French songs at a recital in November. Details will be forth coming as they are finalized. Members are also anticipating a trip to Disney World, EPCOT Center, and Sea World for 5 days and 4 nights during Christmas Break. To help defray some of the costs, Le Club Francois members will be selling 1988 mountain scenes postcard calendars for $5.00 each. When the month Is over, you simply remove the postcard and mail it to a friend. Postcard scenes were photographed by area photographer, Larry Tucker. For more information about club membership or the calendars, contact Gayle Celestin in Modern Foreign Languages in Mckee or call Albie Pabon during the evening hours at 293-9066. Counselor's Corner SHOULD MEN EXAMINE MALE/MASCULINE By JOHN RITCHIE ISSUES? WHERETO GET HELP By LORA HOOPER Staff Writer Is college algebra complicated already? How is your Journalism 240 class going? Are you having problems at home and don't know where to turn. If you are having problems with your classes, your personal life, or just feel generally stressed out, then there are some special centers at WCU designed to help. WCU has four major service centers that they encourage students to use. These centers are the Reading Center, the Writing Center, the Math and Science Resource Centers, and the CAP Center. The Reading Center provides diagnostic testing and tutoring services for any college student who would like to become a better reader. As part of the Department of Elementary Education and Reading, the center also provides courses for reading Improvement and even speed reading. The diagnostic testing is for students who have difficulties with reading or who think that they may have a reading problem. As a result of the tests that are offered, the student can discover his or her reading strengths and weaknesses, their reading rate, vocabulary level, and spelling ability. From the result of the tests, the student may find out there is no problem. However, if there is some difficulty, tutoring is available. Students will receive individual tutoring by trained reading specialists. The tutor will work on special areas of weaknesses and will work to improve those skills. There are even special programs for students with diagnosed learning disabilities. The Reading Center also offers three reading courses for college credit. These are Corrective Reading, Speed Reading and Reading Improvement. Testing and tutorial services in the Reading Center are free to full time students. The center is located in Killian 138. For information, stop by or call 227-7295. The Math and Science Resource Center can provide help for classes in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences (geography and geology), and industrial technology. It provides review work for those who want to freshen up their math skills, and adds more meaning to class lectures. It also offers tutoring offers tutoring and other help for students who need help in remedial work. You can use the Math and Science Research Center if you are taking a math course, just want to review an aspect of math, need some extra work in math to help you handle your science courses, or are even preparing for a Continued Page 7 Some say the 60's were focused on Youth and the 70's on Women while the 80' swill be focused on Men. The Men's Movement In terms of literature and male groups began In the middle 70's and has greatly expanded in the past few years. I often speak to classes and groups on men and masculinity issues. A common question at first is something similar to "Why do men need a 'movement' or encouragement to promote self exploration and change when they already have a majority of the economic and political power within a patriarchal society?" I offer the following reasons for encouraging men to look within themselves and to consider changing or diminishing some unhealthy stereotypic behaviors. Physical Illness/Injury The male role is hazardous to men's physical health. Men die on the average 8 years younger than women and have higher death rates in every life stage. Men have significantly higher murder, suicide, assault, alcohol and drug abuse, and disease rates compared to women, and men are less likely to seek medical help or acknowledge medical symptoms. Isolation and Loneliness Men are stereotyplcally taught to separate and place a priority on self worth and achievements whereas women are stereotyplcally taught how to develop Intimacy and connectedness and place a priority on relationship building. Therefore, men often feel lonely and alienated, and afraid of closeness and equality. Mental Health Deterioration Stereotypic masculine values (e.g., achievement, power, withdrawn emotions, athletic prowess, logical thinking, aggression, control, toughness, order, discipline, independence) seem highly valued in adolescence but often lead to adjustment problems in adulthood due to lack of social-emotional skills. Therefore It appears counter-productive to strongly promote traditional male attitudes and behaviors which at high levels of attainment promote poor coping skills, poor self .Continued Page 7 Rubes® By Leigh Rubin LAGNIAPPE CAJUN KITCHEN HILL STREET IN DILLSBORO Serving Authentic Louisianna Cuisine Speciafizinjj in: * Jambalaya Pouyai * Tarte de'E'crivesse * File' Gumbo "% True Taste, from The South" Also serving: appetizers, salads, entrees, sandwiches and desserts All menu items available as take-out orders Call (704) 586-5720 Tues.-Sat. 11:00-8:30 mem LIGHTS New & Used Books PaperbackTrades Video Rental Specializing in foreign films Music New Age, Classical & Jazz Comics Magazines Phone 586-9499 55 E.
