  • "Betrayal" A 'Farce' by Saundra Hendricks and Maria Huffman "Betrayal", a play by Harold Pinter, is similar to a Homeric epic in that the plot sequence follows the same format with an end, middle, and beginning time scheme. This reversed plot, with scenes packed with suppressed tension, torn loyalties, and confused unspoken feelings proves to be ironic. The theme and the pipt coincide in that everyone in the play is either the betrayed or the betrayer. The play takes place between Venice and London and covers nine years in the lives of a married couple, Robert and Emma Downs, and a best friend, Jerry. Michael Jones successfully portrays Jerry, a compassionate, emotional man who is at the same time unscrupulous and deceitful. Emma, portrayed by Vanessa Drake, seems to be a rather ambiguous character. One doesn't know her true feelings because she is forced to supress them. William Johnson skillfully depicts Robert as a seemingly apathetic individual who conceals his whole self and seems to enjoy the farce, having knowledge of a very personal betrayal his wife committed four years before it ended. The dialogue is structured with short sentences and simple diction saying very little but implying so very much. It presents bold facts, hints, and tantalizing glimpses, which makes the audience infer motives and construct psychological profiles. The point in "Betrayal" is that the bond between Emma and Jerry is temporary whereas the friendship between Jerry and Robert is long-lasting. Hunter Bomb Scare On Wednesday, July 1 at 1:05 p.m. a typed, unsigned note was found in the Hunter Library elevator by a staff member indicating there was a bomb on the fifth floor. The employee promptly called Traffic and Security and officers Dave Bennett, Jim Blackwell and William McClure responded to the call with what Chuck Taylor, Acting Director of Traffic and Security called "prompt efficiency." Taylor added that Traffic and Security and the Cullowhee Volunteer Fire Department should be commended for their excellent handling of the situation. The two children involved remained in the library and were heard discussing the note. They were apprehended and shortly thereafter they admitted they had placed the note in the elevator. According to Doug Reed, Director and Associate Professor of Public Information, the two students who were enrolled in the Gifted Program did not realize the seriousness of the situation and were aghast at the trouble they caused. The parents of both children were notified and the students were dismissed from the program. As Reed put it, the children involved were "good people who had done a bad thing." No charges were pressed but Taylor noted that although the incident was a prank, a hoax can be a dangerous situation with people frightened and possible injury. He added that he can only hope this situation will not reoccur.
