Cullowhee Valley has echoed with this cry for as long as there have been students here. Many times students simply do not know what lies in the surrounding area. Thirty minutes from JtfZZ and Wind Ensembles Perform Tonight campus in Franklin are The Franklin Lanes and Franklin Skate- way. For students who like to bowl, roller-skate or play putt- putt golf these establishments are worth investigating. The words "Bowling Skating Mini-Golf written in white stones in the grass on a hill greet the vistior. The two businesses are located on a hill on the 441 by-pass in Franklin. Franklin Lanes feature bowling and putt-putt golf. The mini-golf is closed for winter but will re-open in April or May depending on the weather. The bowling lanes are sanctioned by the American Bowlers Confcr- Westcrn Carolina University's jazz and wind ensemble will combine talents Thursday, Nov. 17, for a free concert at 8 p.m. in the recital hall of WCU's Music-English Building. The WCU Jazz Ensemble, a 16-member student group, is directed by Mario Gaetano. Music department head Robert Kerhrberg, an accomplished trombonist, will join the group for the concert. Other members of the Jazz Ensemble are Allison Druley, Debbie Turner, Jim Leatherwood, Rick Pennington and Scott Dcmpsey, saxophone: Brian Chance, Ronnie Ingle, James Montgomery and Jason Viska, trumpet; Rick Carter, Amy Teem and Marshall Fletcher, Trombone; Maria Hen- son, piano; Joe Reed, bass; and Shannon Kerr and Matt Henley, drums. Selections by the Jazz Ensemble will include Duke Ellington's "I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart," "Do Nothing "Till You Hear From Me" and "Sophisticated Lady," Oscar Hammcrstcin's "All The Things You Arc;" Dizzy Gillespie's "Night in Tunisia;" and Bob Lowdcn's "Le Grande Funk." Western's Wind Ensemble, Directed by John West, has 19 musicians and is a relatively new performing group. Members are Bridget McCorkle and Sandy Teal, flute; Ginny Barrett, Charlotte Bradley, Pam Coats and Debbie Turner, clarinet; Allison Druley, Jim Leather- wood and Rick Pennington, saxophone; Joe Morris and Rebecca Hale, horn; Curtis Ledford, Marty McCartt and Scott Wilcher, trumpet; Rick Carter, trombone; Marie Kepley, euphonium; Shawn Colvard, tuba; and Richard Fret- toloso and Joe Reed, percussion. The Wind Ensemble will perfonn works from a variety of styles including Charles Simon Catel's "Overture in C," Ralph Vaughn Williams band work "English Folk Song Suite;" Ernst Krenek's "Three Merry Marches;" and a suite from Kurt Weill's "Threepenny Opera." CJ&0L% Upcoming Play Auditions Western Carolina University's department of speech and theatre arts will hold auditions Nov. 20-22 for its upcoming musical production Jesus Christ Superstar. Auditions will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov 20, at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 21, and at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22. All audition sessions will be held in the Ramsey Regional Activity Center on the WCU campus. Anyone plannng to audition for Jesus Christ, Superstar must prepare two short songs and bring the sheet music to the sessions. Those seeking a role also will be expected to do some movement audition, and should wear comfortable clothing and soft-soled shoes. Performances of Jesus Christ, Superstar, will be held Feb. 21-25. WCU Community Orchestra to Present Concert The Western Carolina Community Orchestra will present its fall concert Tuesday, Nov.22, at 8 p.m. in the recital hall of Western Carolina University's Music-English Building. The concert is open to the public and there is no charge for admission. The orchestra is conducted by WCU faculty member Stephen Lawson. William Forensics Defeat Delta Sigma Phi by Frank Lamm STAFF WRITER The Forensics team consisting of Bill Loytty, Stephanie Russell, Mark Wilson, David Hall and alternate Jan Dcthloff defeated Delta Sigma Phi to win first place in Last Minute Production's Annual Quiz bowl. The tournament began on Monday night with eight teams and concluded on with the finals on Wednesday night in the Henegbaum is the assistant conductor and concertm aster. They include: William Henigbaum, Clara Jorstad, Bill Slater, Nelson Schreiber, Jens Pederson, Anita Nixon, Ray Menze, Elizabeth Mainwaring and Judy Teague, violins; Louise Ellis and Nikke Henke, violas; Sarah Reed, cello; David Teague, bass; Alexander Leseur, Debbie West, Bridget McCorkle and Mildred Del Forge, flutes; Kay Lawson, oboe; Allen Moore and Pamela Coats, clarinet; Jane Hastings, bassoon; Darrell Pearson and Curtis Ledford, trumpets; Dathey Reynolds, horn; Marie Kepley, euphonium; and Anthony Higdon, timpani. Conductor Stephen also is the principal horn of the Ashevilie Symphony Orchestra and is the conductor of the Jackson County Youth Orchestra. Henigbaum, also a WCU faculty member, is the principal second violin of the Ashevilie Symphony Orchestra and is the conductor of the Jackson County Youth Orchestra. Spell is a new faculty member at Western Carolina. He has a particular interest in early music and owns several antique flutes. Together with his wife, Jan, the Spells publish a monthly newsletter, "Flute Network," sent to flute players throughout the world Cherokee Room. The single elimination tournament was sponsored by Mortar Board and Last Minute Productions. Students Ken Allen and Cynthia Wilson were in charge of the tournament. Questions that were asked came from the California based company Metis Co. "We weren't really disappointed in the turnout, but it would have been a lot better if we had more groups," said Allen on the tournament. The runner-up Delta Sigma Phi team consisted of James Fattic, Brando Burdette, Mat O'Brien, Will Gunter and alternate Reid Hilliard.
