  • Ft I A ,I\A sap2DDin As row after row of hideous creatures descend from the skies above, you take aim and fire, trying to destroy the earth-bound monsters before they can land on top of you. Sounds like a plot to a science fiction movie from the 1950's, right? Wrong. It is, in fact, a description of'Space Invaders', a popular video game that millions of Americans are playing all over the country. Those quarters, once used for laundry, softdrinks, and snacks, are now used for playing such games as Galaxian, PAC-MAN, Monte Carlo Grand Prix, Choppers and Baseball. Within a short span of 3 years the popular video-games have risen to such a height they now challenge the pinball machine for the silver-colored coin beaming George Washington's bust. Evidence of the video-game craze is apparent everywhere. A casual trip to the local supermarket, restaurant or laundromat will often reveal a video game on the premises. And usually in the process of being opeerated. The sounds of zap, zoom, zebop and bleep, bleep can be heard as one passes the game. Take a look at the players and you will see men, women, children and grandparents playing video games. A haven for video game addicts on campus is, of course, the UC. There one can play to his or her heart's delight. Dudley Williams of Smoky Mountain Recreation, Inc. services the games at the UC and says that "technical schools and colleges are where I keep most of my games." What does the future hold in store for video games? Mr. Williams says, "Because of technology, companies are coming out with a new game once a week," adding that, "the new machines will TALK to you and just about anything else." These new machines are not cheap. The cost of a new game is approximately $4500 with some machines as high- as $5500. The eight machines Mr. Williams services at the UC will soon be going to video heaven way up in the sky. In either late August or early September, Williams' company will install talking video games in the UC. by Rupert Stout
