  • Cats Debut Star Tailback Westerns' beleagured running game may have found new life with the signing of Melvin Dorsey, a 6'0", 198 pound tailback out of Cleveland, Ga. Dorsey initially signed with the University of Georgia after he graduated in 1978. He started one game in 1979 before being sidelined with an ankle injury the rest of the season. Upon his graduation from high school, Dorsey was one of the most heavily recruited running backs in the nation, being the Back of the Year in Georgia and also being named to several prep Ail-American teams. The injury he received during his freshman season coupled with his disappointment with the Georgia program and the signing of Herschel Walker prompted his decision not to return to Athens in 1980. He transferred to WCU last August, sitting out last season to fulfill transfer requirements. Dorsey is the biggest - and possibly the fastest - tailback ever signed by Western. He has the power and speed to make a difference in tough yardage situations. His impact on the program is already beginning to show: Anthony James, last year's top tailback, has been moved to wide receiver to make room in the backfield for Dorsey. James' speed and agility, combined with his bruising running, should make him a prime breakaway threat. Western will need all the talent it can muster this season, with a schedule that includes Southern Conference foes, an ECU team that is trying to regain its former status and national powerhouse Florida State.
