School Board violated the US Constitution by denying the academic freedom of the teacher, Bruce Severy, and the freedom of inquiry of Severy's students0 Severy assigned two of the books at issue to a high school class at the beginning of this school year, after informing School Superintendent Dale Fuhrman, a defendant in the lawsuit, that he intended to do so. On Oct. 31, Fuhrman told Severy he should resign. Fu- hrmen said Severy's contract would not be renewed for the 1974-75 school year because Slaughterhouse Five had WSWKRS TO SPORTS TRIVIA QUIZ I.) Fuhrman had Severy take the books back from the students. A week later, upon a parent's insistence that all copies of another book, James Dickey's Deliverance. Melvin Alme, a School Board member, objected to the book because it contained "foul language" and depicted an instance of homosexual rape. No member of the Board had read the book. Severy later sought permission to use Ray Bradbury's Farenheit 451, a book that tells the evils of book burning and CONTINUED PAGE 8. . . Streakers' Flashes Intercepted Three streakers, two male and one female were caught in the act last night as they completed their flashes across the grass area between Leatherwood and Holder residence halls, One of the three; Herbert Bo Newsome of Salisbury, was taken into custody by the campus security patrol. He was quest" ioned and then released. The other two were questioned by housing officials. In the meantime, a crowd of about 75 students assembled outside Leatherwood in support of the streakers. Some students began demanding the release of Newsome, while others stripped in the chilly temperatures and raced across the grass into their dormitory, Security officers managed to disperse the crowd of students after telling them no charges had been filed against Newsome or the other two. According to one officer, university ad" ministrative officials will have to decide if the charges will be filed at a later date. Administrative reaction to this latest streaking incident and whether any charges will be filed is unknown at this time. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * GEORGE WASHINGTON BIRTHDAY SALE • • *• 22< *2 22 Belts - Ties - Pants - Sweaters 3 Days only David Schulman's Men's Shop opposite the Ritz Theater Sylva ********************************************* * * * # * * * * * * * * * *
