Black people in America for the most part were unaware of their history. The schools had done the disservice of not informing Black or Afrikan people of their roots, if you will. That is to say, if one does not include the stereotyping of Afrikan people that was to be found on the one whole page in our history books when concerning Afrika. Maybe, we are still in fact, we are unaware of our roots, but at least now we do know that our trees do have roots. Recently. Western Carolina University conducted a seminar on Roots. Its program included a reviewing of the movie, Roots. A discussion was held on Roots as black/literature. Guest speakers and WCU faculty delved into various avenues in their relationship to the study of Roots. For instance, the histories of Afrika and America, Negritude, Pan-Af'rikanism were hinted at in talks. Education courses relevant to Roots were carried out, plus a plethora of other such activities. Luckily, I was e a pa lot- leh a li g proc the orkl. importance of such a seminar. It aides one in understanding the scheme of things in contemporary living. Understanding the past forces one to, at least, realized that the present is as such only because of what COMING SOON TO THE RITZ "GREASED LIGHTNING" "THE RESCUERS" "ONE-ON-ONE" "THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT" "ROCKY" "BREAKING TRAINING" "THE DEEP" happened. The longer one denies the horrors, or happiness of the past, the longer one will be afraid to look back. It is unfortunate, however, that the duration of such an important intellectual "innovation" allowed for only a superficial study of Roots to occur. Hopefully, its continuance will be perpetuated by its participants. And perhaps, in the future, a longer program will be initiated and become a reality on WCU's campus. From attending such a seminar, one is forced to make some profound reflections about their views vis a vis American racism. The Roots seminar, from what I perceived, attempted to de-mystify Afrika as a place of savages, and that Afrikans were not, in fact, "inferior." It expelled the notion that Afrikans were better off as "slaves" because that peculiar institution "educated or Civilized" them. One was forced to face the macabre "Middle Passage" along with its destruction, disease, and death. The issue of "slavery" was detailed as an American institution. There even occured a "debate" on world slavery. In case you're wondering, American "slavery" came out as numer uno, if that's the kinda thing that makes you happy. The Reconstruction period was re-examined. Black history and literature were studied conjunctively as they do both create one force. Contemporary black issues such as racism, social injustice, etc. were topics presented. The Roots seminar, by its very nature, taught many things about the human condition of black and white folk, all folk, in fact. We debated in class over the literary and social merits of Roots while knowing (hopefully) that every writer creates from his/her own life experiences. Only the genre of a particular experience is different. Be it spiritual, academic, physical, or whatever!!! Alex Haley is no different from anyone else in this respect. But as Lance Jeffers, black writer-poet, once wrote of black literature as being "the conscience of man" (and woman), the study of Roots validates this thesis.
