XXIIJ NO. 5 Saturday, November 9, 1957 CULLOWHEE, N. C. Twenty WCC Students Named To 'Who's Who' Circle Seniors Selected For High Honor Dean W. B. Harrill has announced that 20 Western Carolina College students have been selected to membership in "Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges." These students were selected on the basis of scholarship, participation and leadership in academic and extracurricular activities, citizenship and service to the college, and promise of future usefulness. Included in the selection are: MARVIN COLE, President of the Student Body. Marvin is a senior from Candler, and is majoring in business administration. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Cole of Candler and a 1950 graduate of Candler High. Activities on this campus have included Business Manager of The Western Carolinian, member of the Student Union Board, Baptist Choir, BSU, Catamount staff, president of the Veterans Club, FBLA, Monogram Club, and Marshall's Club. FANCHEON FUNK, Secretary of the Student Senate. Fancy is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Guy T. Funk of Winston-Salem. She is majoring in biology and physical education and expects to enter medical school after graduation from WCC. She is secretary of the PE Club, president of the Baptist Choir, vice president of the BSU, devotional chairman of the FTA, a senior counselor, and a reporter for The Western Carolinian. BAXTER WOOD, Vice-President of the Student Body. Baxter is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dillard Wood of Cullowhee and a social science major here at WCC. He has served for four years with the United States Navy. His past activities on the campus include membership in the Veterans Club, Monogram Club, Student Union Board and the Central May Day Committee. He is Worthy Patron of East LaPorte Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and Senior Warden of East LaPorte Masonic Lodge. JOAN BROOKS, senior from Candler, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold F. Brooks. She is majoring in English and social science. Joan was elected secretary of the recent Pre-Session Conference. Other activities include past secretary of Madison Dormitory, junior and senior counselor, junior editor of the Catamount, and a member of the Wesley Foundation. She is a graduate of Candler High School, class of '54. GENE ELLIS, President of the Student Union Board. Gene is a senior from Kings Mountain, and a graduate of that high school, class of '53. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Ellis, he Is majoring in music education. Gene is music director of the BSU, president of the Band, and a member of the Baptist Choir, the MENC, and the WCC Chorus. GLENDA HARDY is a senior from Siioam, majoring in business education. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Hardy and graduated from Copeland High School in 1954 as an honor graduate. Gienda is secretary of the Senior Class and a member of the BSU, the FTA, the FBLA, the Women's House Government Council, and the Baptist Choir. CHRIS WILSON is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wilson of Burnsville and a graduate of Bald Creek High School. A senior here at WCC, she is majoring in English and industrial arts. Her activities include Alpha Psi Omega, Western Carolina Players, in which she has played leading roles,- Wesley Foundation, Fine and Industrial Arts Club, English Seminar, and the Radio Club. JOE DODSON, President of the Day Student Government Association. Joe is a senior and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Dodson of Cullowhee. He is majoring in Science. Joe is president of the local Wesley Foundation, a Student Senator, and a member of the Science Club. BYRON SHERMAN is a senior from Fayetteville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Sherman. A 1954 graduate of Steadman High School, Byron is majoring in business administration here at WCC. He is a past editor of The Western Carolinian, a member of the FBLA, Wesley Foundation, Alpha Psi Omega, Radio Club, and The Western Carolinian staff. RAY VOLRATH, President of the Senior Class. Ray is from Bilt- more and a 1952 graduate of Oakley High School. He is majoring in physical education and science. He is president of the PE Club, a Flu Holds Spotlight The flu continued to hold the news spotlight this week as more than 120 students reported to the Infirmary on Wednesday, the day this paper went to press. According to Mrs. Marlene Standley, head nurse, more than 600 cases have been cared for by the local Infirmary. Of these, more than 250 have been sent home. Others have been put to bed in the Infirmary and many have been confined to their rooms in the dormitories. The first case diagnosed as flu was reported to the Infirmary on Octobr 15. Since that time it has been a day by day battle to care for all the sick people. Last week was particularly rough, according to Mrs. Stanley. The busiest single day was last Friday, when more than 200 students were processed. Three students are being tested for Asian flu. As of yet no report has returned from the laboratory. Approximately 1,000 shots have been given for this disease. Assisting Mrs. Standley are Miss Faye Lakey and Mrs. Lucille Painter. FRANK PLEMMONS is a senior from Asheville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vance Plemmons. A 1951 graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School, he is past president of the Student Union Board and the Sophomore Class. He was also vice president of the Men's House Government. Frank is a member of Chi Delta Fraternity and the FBLA. , NORMA WELCH, senior from Franklin, is a 1954 honor graduate of Franklin High School. She is president of the Band and the MENC. Majoring in Spanish and Music, she is a member of the WCC Chorus, the Baptist Choir, and the BSU. DAN HASELDEN is a 1950 graduate of Mooresville High School and the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Haselden. He has spent four years in the Air Force, is married, and has two children. Dan is majoring in mathematics and chemistry and is active in the Science Club. BILLY SUE HOLLIFIELD is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Hollifield of Valley Springs. Billy Sue is majoring in business education and social science. She is a member of the FBLA, FTA, Women's House Government, Baptist Choir, and the Inter-Club Council. SHERRILL SPEARS is the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Spears of Kings Mountain. Sherrill graduated from Kings Mountain High School in 1954. Here at Western Carolina he is majoring in English, journalism and drama. He is president of Alpha Phi Sigma, vice president of Alpha Psi O- mega, and a member of the English Seminar, the WCC Players, BSU, and the Baptist Choir. LINDA ISRAEL is an Elementary Education major from Candler, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James P. Israel. She is a 1954 graduate of Candler High. Linda is a student senator, a senior counselor and a member of the FTA, Women's Athletic Association, the ACE, WCC Chorus, Baptist Choir and the Women's House) Government. CHARLIE BYRD, Captain of —Continued on Page 2 As recommended by the Pre- Session Conference the Inter-Club Council has been reorganized. The purpose of this council, as set forth by its original organization, is to bring about better coordination of the various campus organizations; to work out any differences which rise between these organizations; and to aid in the presentation of formal dances. The first meeting under the reorganization was held Monday night, October 23rd. The following slate of officers were elected: Charles Crawford, president; Mary Louise Carpenter, vice president; Betty Jo Clary, secretary; and Joe Dodson, reporter. The business of this meeting was primarily concerned with the new organization. The council agreed to cooperate with the senate in presenting invocation before basketball games which was a recommendation of the pre-session conference. The next meeting of the I.C.C. will be Monday night, Nov. 11. Victory Bell The "Victory Bell" that has sfbod outside Moore Dormitory for many years has been dismantled by the college and will be relocated near the Student Union Building. According to college officials, the bell was removed from its old stand because students had been ringing it at unwarranted times. Construction on the new bell platform is expected to be completed and the bell remounted by Saturday, in time for the Emory and Henry game. Atlanta Symphony Second Lyceum Program The first major symphony orchestra to appear on the campus in several years will be heard in Hoey Auditorium Monday at 8:00 p.m. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra consists of eighty pieces and will be conducted by Henry Sop- kin. Of the thirty major symphony orchestras in the United States only nine employ American conductors. Mr. Sopkin is one of the nipe: He hasfijtso serveoTat" the University of Georgia. The program will consist of: Glinka's "Overture to Russian and Ludmilla," Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony," McDonald's "Suite from Childhood," Corelli's "La Tolia," Greig's "Peer Gynt Suite No. 2," and Rimsky-Korsakov's "Capriccio Espagnole." In addition to those prieces listed a number of Strauss waltzs and lighter music will be played. Cloninger, Sherrill Win In Campus Election Last Week Flash! Mr. Clarence Goode, Student Union Director for the past two years, has resigned to accept a position on the Hendersonville News-Times, a daily newspaper. He will leave for Hendersonville tomorrow. Mr. Marvin Cole, student body president, will serve as the new Student Union Director, according to an announcement by Dr. Paul A. Reid, president of the college. Cole stated that there would be no changes in the program of the Student Union and he encourages students to take advantage of the Sunday afternoon activities. Bob Cloninger No Game Tonight The football game between Western Carolina and Emory and Henry scheduled for tonight has been postponed because of flu in the Catamount camp. The FBLA and the Alumni dances have also been canceled. Bulletin! A meeting of all male students who are interested in forming a chapter of the National Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity on this campus will be held Wednesday night at 7:45 in the Personnel Office on the third floor of Joyner Building. The Alpha Phi Omega is a national service fraternity of present or former scouts or scout leaders. Some 300 chapters are located on college campuses though- out the nation. Everyone interested is urged at attend. NOTICE The Future Business Leaders of America invites all students, faculty, and interested persons to the Gallery of Hunter Library Tuesday, November 12, at 7:30 p.m. to hear Mr. Leon Savage, General Manager, Dave Steel Company of Asheville, speak on "What Management Expects of College Graduates." Baptist At Meet Several Western Carolina College students were in Durham last week end attending the Annual Fall Convention of the Baptist Student Union of North Carolina at the First Baptist Church In that city. They were among some 700 college and university students who attended the two-day conference which had as its theme, "Christ in You—the Hope." Principle speakers were Dr. L. D. Johnson, First Baptist Church, Danville, Virginia; Rev. Bill Lawson, Student Director of Southern Texas University, Houston, Texas; and Dr. Baker James Cauthen, Executive Secretary of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, Richmond, Virginia. The forty-five voice State BSU Choir, composed of students from the various colleges, performed at four of the Convention sessions. Jimmy Powell, a senior at Wake Forest College, is president of the state group. Correction In the the last edition of The Western Carolinian we stated that Nantahala Power and Light Company gave the camp site on Lake Glenville to the College. The College bought the site at a very low cost, but the site was not given to us. Health & Safety News Notices have been sent to those people who have failed to register their 1957 license numbers with tht car registration office. If this matter is not attended to immdiately, there will be a pen. alty involved. Alumni and students are attempting to raise $2,000 to construct a lodge on the site. News Briefs Linebreaklng The Student Senate voted Monday night to take steps toward curtailing the linebreaking in the cafeteria lines. Students caught breaking line will be brought before the Senate for trial. Penalties for this offense are outlined in the Student Handbook. M. S. M. Conference The District III Conference of the North Carolina Methodist Student Movement will be held on the WCC campus January 11-12 according to an announcement by Ben Edwards, Chairman. Members of the Wesley Foundations at Appalachian, Brevard, and other colleges are expected to attend. W-C Staff to Attend Meet Representatives from the Western Carolinian Staff will be at Catawba College December 7th to attend the annual fall meeting of the North State Conference Press Association. The local paper will be entered in competition with the publications of the other colleges. The Hump Frank L. Hutchison, 14th Highway Division engineer, has announced that the Balsam Mountain road (Highway 19A-23) is expected to be open in eight weeks should the weatherman smile favorably on the construction. A'umni Awards Two Jackson County natives, an industrialist and educator, received the annual Western Carolina College Alumni Distinguished Service Awards at the 1957 Homecoming celebration. The recipients are David H. Brown, Jr., president of New Process Gear Corp., of Syracuse, New York, a Chrysler Corp. subsidiary, and James Orville Terrell, dean of instruction at Gardner- Webb College, Boiling Springs, N. C. Spring Dance In its meeting Monday night, the Senate voted to give the sponsorship of the annual Spring Dance to the Inter-Club Council. The Senate, however, will provide the money for the dance band and refreshments. Plans now call for getting a big-name orchestra for the occasion. Lost and Found The Dean's Office has the following "found" articles on hand: One ball point pen, one fountain pen, one pocket-type flashlight, and a costume bracelet. Owners may claim these articles at the office. A Week Late This edition of the Western Carolinian is a week late. It was scheduled to be printed last Sat urday. On Wednesday, the day we go to press, the Editor and several other members were struck with the flu so the presses failed to roll. You may also expect an edition of the paper next Saturday, baring unforseen flu bugs. Fall Formal Mary Louise Carpenter, president of Women's House Government, has announced that the annual fall formal dance sponsored by that group will be held Saturday, November 16. "A Visit to Candyland" will be the theme of the dance and music is to be provided by the Mark VI Combo. It will be held in Breese Gymnasium from 8:00 p.m. until twelve midnight. Miss Linda Isreal and Miss Jean Hill are serving as co-chairmen of the dance. May Court Selected In the general campus election held Tuesday of last week, Bob Cloninger, senior from Dallas, was elected Business Manager of the Catamount, WCC yearbook. Mrs. Dottie Sherrill, senior from Weaverville, was elected May Queen. Miss Jean Hill, junior from Ed- neyville, was electd Maid of Honor. To serve with the Queen and Maid of Honor, a court composed of four seniors, three sophomores and two freshmen was elected. Cloninger is the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Cloninger of Dallas. He graduated from Dallas High School in 1953. He has received the American Farmer Degree, the highest honor bestowed by the National Future Farmers of A- merica. Here at WCC he is majoring in Fine and Industrial Arts. Bob is a member of the Wesley Foundation and the Fine and Industrial Arts Club. He is staff photographer for The Western Carolinian. Elected to the May Court are seniors Micki Carter, Jane O'Neill, Dee Smith and Chris Wilson; juniors: Sarah Davis, Glendale Teague and Sandra Thatcher; sophomores: Jean Bridges, Norma Crawford and Colleen Gambill; and freshmen: Ann Henry and Pat Rowe. Miss Barbara Oates was elected to serve as student senator from the Freshman Class. The May Queen is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Bradley of Weaverville. An elementary education major, she is a transfer student from the University of South Carolina, where she served as a majorette. Last year, she was elected to serve on the May Court. Miss Hill is a 1955 graduate of Edneyville High School and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hill. She also served on last year's May Court and is a member of the Marshall's Club, MENC, FTA, BSU, Senate, WCC Chorus, and the Baptist Choir. Gamma Tau Recognized The Gamma Tau Fraternity has been officially recognized by the College and becomes the third such group to be organized on the Western Carolina College campus. According to Griff Miller, president, Gamma Tau will remain a local fraternity for the present but plans call for the group to join the national membership under the heading of Alpha Tau O- mega, one of the largest and most recognized national fraternities in the United States and Canada. Other members in addition to Miller are: Bob Abbott, Tom Bridges, John Bolen, Frank Bradley, Tom Burke, Charles Byrd, George Curtiss, Joe Dodson, Mac Gray, Jerry Hawkins, Jack Hendrix, Herbert Hickson, Jr., and Robert Zerfross. The main objectives of Gamma Tau are to promote leadership, scholastic standing, athletic scholarship, and intramural participation.
