  • The Western Carolinian Page 9 Thursday, January 26, 1989 DEPARTMENT OF MILITARY SCIENCE OFFERS 2 & 3 YEAR SCHOLARSHIPS A L(D(Dte AH BsmLcDtf^ Let's Study in L©NID(Q)N Army ROTC has full tuition, 3-year and 2-year scholarships available for qualified students, according to Lieutenant Colonel Donald A. Carter, Professor of Military Science at Western. To be eligible, students must have at least a 2.5 grade point average. A SAT score of above 850 is required for a 3 year scholarship. Any extracurricular activities a student may have on their high school and college records will greatly enhance their chance in selection. The army is looking for well- rounded young men and women that have leadership potential. You don't have to be enrolled in ROTC to apply. "Army ROTC scholarships are just about the best you'll find anywhere. Besides full tuition and educational fees, you will also receive an amount for text books, supplies, and equipment, and up to $1,000 cash per year for each year the scholarship is in effect. Currently we have 6 cadets on Army ROTC scholarships here at Western. Over the past several years we have seen an increasing interest in the scholarships offered by Army ROTC. Unlike most scholarships and financial aid programs available to students at Western Carolina University Financial need is not a requirement to apply because ROTC scholarships are awarded on merit alone. This difference has caused many students to take a closer look at what they see, judging by the thousands of nationwide scholarship applicants each year," LTC Carter indicated. Students interested in finding out more about the two and three year scholarships offered by Army ROTC should call Major Leo French, at 227-7438, or stop by the ROTC Department on the second floor of the Jordan- Phillips Fieldhouse. by Holly Wheatley PEOPLE EDITOR WCU's Debate Team Hits The Road by Christine Faris NEWS EDITOR Tomorrow, WCU's Debate Team will leave for Clcmson University where it will complete in its first tournament of the semester. Ralph Hamlett, director and coach, explained that the team's purpose, participating in Cross Examination Debate, fo cuses on current issues of concern. The students involved spend a great deal of time researching a topic and then have the opportunity to argue their case with other schools. According to Hamlett, (See Debate page 10 ->) Daniel Lorey II of Cullowhee, a 1988 summa cum laude graduate of WCU in mathematics and chemistry, received a $6,000 graduate fellowship from the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. The fellowship has enabled Lorey to continue his studies and laboratory research at Western. Fifty students from across the country were awarded the prestigous fellowships to support first-year graduate work. They were selected from 183 applicants nominated by their local Phi Kappa Phi chapters. Western's chapter of Phi Kappa Phi was started in 1972 and has inducted more than 1,000 students, including Lorey in 1987. Four WCU students have received Phi Kappa Phi graduate fellowships since 1980. The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi was established in 1932 to recognize and encourage superior scholarship in all disciplines. Lorey chose WCU to pursue a master's degree because of a research project started in 1985 under chemistry professor Frank Prochaska, although he could have used his fellowship at any university of his choice. His involvement in Prochaska's work in infrared matrix isolation spectroscopy concerns freezing gases in argon or neon at 12 degrees Kelvin and studying the resulting chemical reactions. By using special instruments in Prochaska's WCU lab, researchers attempt to learn things about the molecular geometry of new chemicals, many of which are not stable and do not exist naturally. Lorey said that although this research is basic research, it may help determine what reactions are going on in the upper atmosphere because of sulfur dioxide emmissions from heavy industry. "If we can determine what is happening in the laboratory, it may help determine what reactions are going on in the upper atmosphere," he said. Prochaska's work may pave the way for other researchers to find a solution to air pollution problems in the United States, he said. Lorey presented a paper on "Computer Manipulation of Infrared Matrix Isolation Spectroscopy" at last year's National Conference on Undergraduate Research at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. A native of Ithaca, N.Y., Lorey moved to Cullowhee nine years ago with his family, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Lorey and a sister, Deena, a freshman at Western. He graduated in 1984 from Sylva-Webster High School. Students visit How would you like to spend the month of September in London and get a full semester's credit at the same time? With WCU's London Program you can meet with your regular classes during the first week of fall semester, spend the next month in London, and rejoin your regular classes when you return. There are at least 6 and as many as 10 hours of credit that accompany the trip and many regular courses you can choose from to fill out your schedule. The approximate cost is $1,800, which includes a single room with kitchenette in London, daily breakfast, plane fare, and an estimate of other food and incidental expenses. Two WCU faculty members will accompany the Stonehenge group and teach the classes in London which are specially designed for the trip. General Education courses are best suited for the rest of your schedule, but students are not restricted to them. The faculty will help students arrange alternative assignments for regular classes missed while in London. For those interested and desiring more information, there will be a meeting on January 30, at 4 p.m., in room 304 of the Music/ English building. Students and faculty from last year's London trip will report on their experience. If you cannot attend the meeting but are interested, please contact Terry Nienhuis, Department of English.
