  • Sports Carolinian Photo by Doug Cavanaugh 1 WCU quarterback David Mashbum fades back during action against the Citadel last Saturday night. < Catamount Woes 28-21 Hangover A week ago, the moods in the football camps of WCU and East Carolina University were as different as the countryside that surrounds the respective campuses. This week, the moods again offer a sharp contrast, but have made 180 degree turns as the result of last Saturday's games. Western Carolina, full of renewed hope and optimism a week ago, is now experiencing the hangover of a 28-21 loss to The Citadel which virtually eliminated the Catamounts from the Southern Conference championship race at mid-season. East Carolina put on a dramatic fourth quarter rally and defeated Richmond, 24-22, last Saturday to snap a three-game losing streak that had shaken the Pirates program from top to bottom. About the only thing close to comparable in the two programs this week are the records of the old rivals. Western is 2-4 and ECU is 2-3. Adding to the Catamounts woes is the fact that they must face the Pirates on homecoming day at Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, a place where the Catamounts have never won in five tries. However, if numbers mean anything and Western Carolina's followers hope they do in this case, the Catamounts are due to play the Pirates close this Saturday. In the even numbered years since the 28-game series was renewed in 1975, the Catamounts have played well, losing 24-17 in '76 and 14-6 in '78. East Carolina took a 15-13 lead in the series by routing the visiting Catamounts, 31-6, in last year's season opener. Western and ECU opened their seasons "with victories - the Catamounts a 16-14 winner over VMI and the Pirates handled Duke easily, 35-10 - but both have had their problems since then. Western lost to Tennessee Tech (26-10). Furman (28-14) and Clemson (17-10) before winning again at Middle Tennessee (24-10). ECU followed the Duke victory with a surprising 13-9 loss to Southwestern Louisiana, then fell to eighth ranked Florida State (63-7) and still unbeaten Southern Mississippi (35-7). Whereas the Catamounts live and die with the pass. Fast Carolina believes in keeping the ball close to the ground and has a pair of outstanding running backs. Anthony Collins, a 202 pound halfback, has rushed for almost 2.000 yards in his career at ECU and is one of the nation's finest kickoff returners. 209 pound Theodore Sutton has piled up over 2.400 yards for the Pirates with sprinter's speed. As a team, the Pirates are averaging 247 yards a game rushing, including 407 yards last Saturday against Richmond, while putting the ball in the air only in case of national emergency, having thrown onlv an average of 10 times a game. Western counters with a pass-oriented attack that ranks eighth in the nation this week with a 244 yards per game average. Quarterback David Mashburn came off the bench in the third game of the season and has responded with 899.yafds through the air on a 61 of 114 passing record for six touchdowns. The Enka sophomore ranks 18th nationally in passing efficiency with a 130.10 rating. His favorite target continues to be 5-9, 160 pound Gerald Harp, the nation's second ranked receiver this week. The Red Oak, Georgia senior has caught 40 passes for 647 yards and became the fourth Continues on page 16.. ■■■Ml ■BffA'.V.VAV.'.V.V.V.V.V. .V.V ,-.v.-,Y.
