Page 14/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/November 8, 1979 Sports WESTERN CAROLINIAN UT holds off WCU comeback Furman , WCU vthippln' out big guns The UT-Chattanooga Moccasins used an intercepted pass in the end zone on the last play o{ the game to withstand a furious Fourth quarter Western Carolina comeback to edge the Catamounts 42-35 in a Southern Conference Footgall game in Whitmire Stadium Saturday afternoon, The Cats, down 28-10 al the half, and 35-1J with 8:20 left in the third period staged one of the greatest comebacks in recent Southern Conference history to send the game to the final play, and give 7,109 Whitmire Stadium tans a great game ending finale. Tlie Mocs used the big plays and a bone crushing line performance to Keep the Cats playing "catch up" all game, Moc halfback loin Ball, who set a UTC school record lor rushing in the game with 213 yards, broke a 74 scoring run alter only 3:28 had elapsed in the contest lo put UTC ahead. 7-0. The Mocs exploded again in Ihe lasi minute of the first hall, scoring on a two yard run by Mike .Smith, subbing for UT's leading rusher injured Gwain Durden . and a 30 yard lo pass from Steve Woods to Joe Burker after a Catamount fumble. The pass was the only pass completion of the day for the Moes as they ran up 198 rushing yards in the first half. The Cats day seemed doomed when Wclton Ellison broke a 65 yard run all the way to the end zone to push ihe Moes out to their largest margin, 22 points, at 35-13. But then the Cats in a must win situation to stay- alive in the Southern Conference race, came alive. Leonard Williams capped a 12-play 62 yard scoring drive for Western with a 1 yard run over right tackle with 2:31 left in the third quarter. Pusey hit Williams with a pass to complete the 2-point conversion and narrow the Moc lead to35-21. Chattanooga moved the next possession out to the Western 48 before Tony Ball was stopped short of a first down on a 4th and 2 play. The Cats immediately drove 53 yards in 6 plays for a score on Anthony .lames' 18 yard run.,The big play of the drive was a 23 yard screen pass from Puscy to Williams. Ted Dunn's extra point went wike to the tight and the score went to 35-27. A short kick off and a face mask penalty gave UTC the ball at the WCU 48. The Cat defense then held again, but on the third play of their next possession a Mike Pusey pass was deflected and intercepted by Moc defensive back Ronnie Robinson who returned it 15 yards to the Catamount 45. Six plays later. Ball galloped in from 31 yards to push the Mocs back ahead 42-27 with b:45 left to play. Starting from the 20 after Phifer Howell kicked out of the end «inc. the Cats put together yet another dramatic scoring drive. Harp carried 15 yards on a Hanker reverse. Pusey hit Tightend Eddie McGill for 22 yards and then Dwayne Norman for 28 yards all the way lo the Moc 15. After an incomplction McGill caught another pass for I 1 yards to set up a four yard touchdown scapcr by James with just 5:04 left in the contest. The 2 point conversion was good to cut the Moc lead to 42-35. On an onside attempt UTC recovered in at Western's 37 and. with the running of Smith and Ball, carried all the way lo the Cat 17 before a fumble cost Woods 12 yards back to the Western 29. Joe Zeman's miss of a 46 yarder gave the Cats more chance, with l':29 left to play. Williams was stopped for no gain and Pussey had an incomplete pass. Then Alfonzo McCloud intercepted. Pusscy's pass but fumbled it back to the Cats on the WCU 34. On the next play, incomplete to McGill the Mocs were asessed 13 yards for pass interference and 15 more on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty all the way lo the UTC 38. Pusey hit Dean for 9 yards and then lo Harp for I 7 down to the Moc 12 with only 34 seconds left. Pusey was shaken up on the next play, an incomplction, and Kent Briggs came in to throw another to set up a 3rd down play. With 16 seconds left Turn to Page 15, Please. Photo by E.S. McDaniel Cats fall short in 'heartbreak hotel' 'Shootout at the OK coral.' The days are numbered for Sirrine Stadium as Furman University is in the process of building a football stadium on its campus, but the scoreboard in the venerable facility may not make it through the coming weekend. If Western Carolina and Furman continue their scoring pace of the last three weeks, the overload could short circuit the old scoreboard. The Southern Conference game will be kicked off at 2:00 p.m. in downtown Greenville, but the way the Catamounts and Paladins have been scoring points lately, the contest could carry over into the darkness. Furman is coming off an NCAA record-breaking 63-55 win over Davidson while Western had a spine-tingling rally fall short in a 42-35 loss to UT-Chattanooga. In its last three games, the Paladins have averaged 38 points and the Cats have been even more potent with a 4 point average. When the teams met last season, the Southern Conference championship was on the line in Western's homecoming game as Furman entered the game 3-1 in the league and 6-3 overall while the Catamounts were 4-0 and riding a six game win streak. It will be homecoming again, this time Furman's turn, but the outcome of the game will have no bearing on the conference title. The Paladins are 2-3 in the conference, 3-6 overall while Western is 1-3 and 5-4. Furman, a pre-season favorite along with UT-Chattanooga to win the Southern Conference title, got off to a miserable start this season and lost its opening five games. Coach Dick Sheridan's team bounced back to knock off Marshall and Appalachian State on successive weekends then lost 21-20 at VMI on a controversial call on an extra point attempt. Last Saturday, the Paladins rolled up 623 yards of offense in the 63-55 win over Davidson. "Furman has an extremely explosive offensive football team that can score from anywhere on the field at any time," noted Waters as he watched films of last week's game in which the Paladins spotted Davidson a 21-0 lead and then came back to score five touchdowns in the second quarter. "They have really improved in the second half of the season and have a lot of monentum going into these last two conference games," said Waters of his Southern Conference foe. "They have found a young quarterback that does the job to go along with a pair of outstanding running backs." Sophomore Tim Sorrells is the young quarterback. He accounted for five touchdowns in the Davidson game, passing for three and running for two,, while amassing 274 yards of offense in three quarters of play. Sophomore running backs Mike Glenn and Brothel Cole have combined for 1206 yards and 11 touchdowns. Waters says he thinks his Catamounts will bounce back from last week's loss. "The loss to Chattanooga, and the way we lost, was a great disappointment, but the way this team fought back and did not quit gives me an optimistic approach to these last two games," he explaines. "We are out of the conference race, but we can have our best season in the last five years and that is something to play for," he noted. Western, should it win over Furman and East Tennessee, would finish 7-4 and that would be the best record since the Catamounts went 9-2 in 1974. The Catamounts also have some individual goals on their minds. Quarterback Mike Pusey has his name beside seven Southern Conference records could claim an eighth Saturday with three touchdowns to his credit. He has accounted for 45 touchdowns and three more would give him a career touchdown responsibility record. He has passed for 1,740 yards and 15 TDs this season. Wid receiver Gerald Harp needs only 44 yards to break the conference's career record for pass receiving yards. He has caught 42 for 822 yards this season and shows career marks of 127 catches for 2254 yards and 23 touchdowns. Tailback Leonard Williams needs 178 yards in the last two games to break the freshman season rushing yardahe record of 983 yards, currently held by Darrell Lipford. The rookie is second in scoring in the conference with 12 touchdowns.
