Cullowhee Correspondent Encounters . . . The Spirit Of '77 by Alverez Martin While enroute to Sylva last Friday, I chanced to pick up a hitchiker, assuming he was typical Cullowheeophile making his weekly run to Waynesville to procure the weekend beverages. After exchanging the I found that my earlier assumption of his mission had been incorrect. The gentleman related that he was "an entering freshman" returning to his home in the Piedmont. I goin' go to school here in the fall „ Had to come up and sign some papers and shit but I din't sign them." He chuckled triumphantly. His U.S.A. tee shirt must have been fresh out of Norman's half-price rack, but sweat marks had already colored the armpits . He seemed to enjoy the picturesque trailer parks that obliterated the landscape along Highway 107. Deciding to make the best of what fate had wrought, I inquired as to why he had chosen Cullowhee to be the home of his intellectual pursuits. "What?" I rephrased my question. "Why did you decide to come to Western?" "Weill my folks said I could go wherever I wanted to, but my shop teacher said for me to learn how to weld, they make good money- welders do, an' it ain't hard work." He paused to comb his hair out of his eyes, then he continued. "Me, I wanted to go meet some college girls and stuff. I'plied to two or three places but they wouldn't take me. Said somethin' 'bout 800 ain't enough on that SAT test, so I 'plied Western and they told me come on." We neared the corner of Colonel Sanders and Cagle. "I go straight here and you probably want to go to the right," I told him. Heaven knows why, but at this point I asked him if he had decided upon his major. "Yep. Bology. Cause I like bugs an'all." "This is as far as I go." We had reached the traffic light and the aspiring entomologist disembarked. As he walked across the traf" fie island, I wondered how many more people of his caliber would converge on Cullowhee in the fall, or indeed how many are already here. Certainly, all institutions of higher learning are experiencing economic difficulties, but is it necessary to accept anyone with the money? Will the quality of our education decline because of the admission of substandard students? The Western Carolina University Record 1973-74 states (p. 9) that the goals of the University are sought, "through a concern for excellence." Where are those standards of excellence.?
