(From this, it is clear how much the pen is inferior to the sword.) Robert Burton, Anatomy of Melancholy One day last week, while on a stroll across the far side of our lovely Plantation, I passed near the Laughing Stock/Mountain Foundation Tower (LS/MFT), where the High Foreman, the Mid-Foremen, and countless Low-Foremen hold daily court, council, and general canard sessions. Near the four thousand trash disposal units behind the building, I found a discarded copy of an apparently declassified secret Memo, a reprint of which I have offered to the Editor of this newspaper in order that he might publish it for the enlightment of all his readers. For instance, should an ambitious Sub-Foreman desire to order some bananas and doughnuts for the pleasure of his battery of newly-hired secretaries, he might well express his wishes to the Head Procuress as follows: Madam: In filling our order, please exercise your synchronized logistical flexibility (ZAP-650) in order to expedite our responsive digital hardware (ZAP-548, and advise when willing. Yours, etc. The possibilities seem endless, and I can hardly wait to try out some of the seemingly infinite combinations of words in my next communique to the High Foreman. I rest assured that he will definitely know what my message purports, while any lesser reader would be at a loss to understand it, yet would not dare admit that he could not! Next to Free Enterprise, perhaps clear, uncluttered speech is the most precious property of Mankind! Valete! Gas Tax by Rick McDaniel North Carolinians were practically assured of a three cent-per-gallon increase in the state gasoline tax Tuesday as a 14-member committee composed of House and Senate members sent the controversial bill back to the full House for approval. According to Senator J.J. Harrington, Gov. Hunt's floor manager for the bill, passage is expected. Harrington said "There'll be a few that are against it, but everything is going to be absolutely all right.' If the measure is passed, it will generate an estimated $113 million for the state Department of Transportation for the physcal year beginning in July. Of this amount, $82 million would be from the gas tax while an additional $31 million would come from increased truck, auto, and drivers license fees. The program would raise an estimated $119 million the following year. The bill also provides for $59 million per year in sales taxes on auto parts to be transferred to the Highway department, dependent on additional legislation to make up for the dificit in the General Fund that this would create.
