  • Saundra Hendricks and Martin Pierce extol the virtues of married life in "Side By Side By Sondheim", WCU's first summer theatre production. - Carolinian Photo by Rick McDaniel. Local and Long distance Van Lines 456-3001--Waynesville "Side By Side": Bawdy The WCU Summer Theatre officially opened Tuesday evening with Side By Side By Sondheim, a musical farce written by prolific Broadway genius Steven Sondheim. The show is a fast-paced conglomeration of bits and pieces of musicals Sondheim has written or collaberatcd on in his illustrious career. The performance opens with 'Comedy Tonight', the well known introduction to Zero Mostell's "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum". The cast provides us with a little-known predecessor to the number known as "Bless our little Company" that reportedly emptied houses with its banality. One only has to hear this number once to know why Sondheim replaced it. The show features a fine group of performers who are vocally well suited to their roles. The female chorus consists of Pam Cook, Saundra Hendricks, Mary Coppage, and Margaret Davis. They shine on several numbers, including the bawdy 'You gotta get a Gimmick' and 'You Could Drivfe A Person Crazy". The male chorus consists of William Johnson, Martin Pierce, and Michael Jones, who also lends his piano virtuosity along with Barbara Dooley. While the men have no numbers together except for accompaniment, individually and in duets they are excellent. Davis and Pierce team up in a hillarious duet called 'You Must Meet My Wife', in which a newly-wed husband lauds the virtue and virginity of his new bride to his former mistress, while Hendricks and Jones sing a marvelous number called "Barcelona" about a one-night stand that turns into something more, much to Jones's consternation. Veteran performer Pam Cook does an admirable job on "Send in The Clowns" despite a last minute bout with laryngitis that left her voice a trifle scratchy on opening night. Side By Side is a bawdy, fast paced musical which is just plain fun. Anyone who misses this farcial melee is doing themselves a disfavor. The show closes tonight, but limited tickets should still be available by calling the box office at 227-7491.
