  • PAGE 16/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/APRIL 27, 1978 'Arrogant' Gudger accused of misusing Long Poll Dear Editor, Ii is a distasteful duty, thai I owe to mv 33-year-old company, to write this open letter at this particular Bui I feel it is necessary, when so man) elected •ihiiais have demonstrated Increasing)) arrogani lisn.'gard ol private rights. I have before me a clipping from The Asheville \pril lirh: an article headed "Thomas, : K.ui I ight." Congressman Gudger's unauthorized use ol figures : our poll surpises us, hecause Long Marketing North C arolina Poll (l.MNCP) is clearly marked on P their subscription contract as (a) "For Exclusive si oi LMNCP Subscribers," and (h) "Copyright W. H. Long Marketing, Inc." Congressman MT is not now, and has never been, a subscriber lo Mir poll throughout the eighl years of its history—and as licensed aitornev he musl know the consequences of minim mem of copyright. CiTlaiulv with mi annual salary ol $57.(MX), and annual expense allowances of S313.000. the $54 annual subscription fee charged Congressmen for authorized isc ol the LMNCP Poll canrtol be a deterrent. We have rd ol six mailings to his Washington office, since ns election, suggesting that he subscribe to it—as do a majority of the North Carolina delegation, and main others in the political and business worlds, and individuals. rhe poll report, which Congressman Gudger obtained from a now known source, without paying us for it. and chose to quote verbatim to The Asheville Citizen of his own volition—and perhaps has quoted to .niters—has alvvavs been advertised with the cautions "Only subscribers mav copy or reproduce" and "For exclusive use of 1 MNC'I' subscribers." When first vve heard ol this, the morning of April 17. we called Mr. Mallonee of the Congressman's Asheville office Staff (who amazingly disclaimed any knowledge of this Page One article from his home city new spapei !). and vv ho promised to immediate!) conlacl 'ns boss when we gave him 4K hours until 3:40 p.m. April I1' to cause to be issued, and inform us of, a public admission of Congressman Gudger's unauthorized use it our property, sent to all media to which the unauthorized use of our poll material was disclosed or sent. I hat reasonable period of retraction having passed. without further word from anyone in the employ of Congressman Gudger. we now issue this public letter, ami note also that Congressman Gudger quoted our findings on the Congressional seat situation in the I Ilh District incompletely and out of context. We leave up to SON,?- HAVE tECOMe FftgR- / m i nmw'i *wllT N (OO GO Emm. AVOW MOCHtOO WWfT/fBGCOM. vour individual good judgements, as journalists ami newscasters, disposition of this open letter—our first experience, at such a high level, of misuse of our subscription poll material for political purposes. W. II. long Press assistant Pete Gilapano said in response to the letter (hat, "He |Gudgcr| did use the results of the poll in one of his interviews with an Asheville Citizen reporter...He did not use them in any of his news releases." Gilpann said that Gudger was "...not aware that he could not quote Ihe report," and said he did not expect any lawsuits from the company. You missed it Dear Editor, Mary Akerman gave a sensational performance in Forsyth Auditorium Tuesday night. Her program, which she vv ill present as her graduate recital at the University of Georgia in about three weeks, was both div rise and well executed. Classical guitar enthusiasts were pleased with the inclusion of such classics as Bach's "Prelude and Fugue from the Second Lute Suite" and Carlevarro's "Preludio Americano," while the less experienced listeners were enthralled by R. Smith Brindle's "El Polifemo de Oro." This last piece, composed of four individual parts, comprised an interesting experiment in the possible sounds produced from a guitar. Despite Ms. Akerman's reluctance to include this piece, it was indeed one of the highlights of the performance. Another verv interesting and difficult piece was M. Ravel's "Pavane for a Dead Princess." Ilu- one-and-a-half hour concert given by Ms. Akerman. who is a student at the University of Georgia. and who has travelled and studied in Spain and various places in the United States, was a pleasure to the few that attended. It is a shame that such talent, when offered to Ihe students at an institution of higher learning such as Western, should go relatively iineiijoyed. It is the hope of the University Center Board, who sponsored this concert, that such demonstrations of apathy (which include not checking the newspaper and radio for upcoming events) will not become the tradition of this school. If for no other reason, remember that each student contributes to the financial support of all the UCB events through the 'lees' payment he/she makes every semester. Please profit from this inevitable fact; actively support the UCB, and attend its events whenever possible. Carrie M. Thomas Vice President, UCB Western students: 'We shall not pass this way again9 And it came to pass. Early in the morning toward the last day of the semester, There arose a great multitude smiting the books and wailing. And there was much weeping and gnashing of teeth, For the day of judgement was at hand And they were sore afraid, for ihey had left undone Those things which they ought to have done. And there was no help for it. And there were many abiding in the dorms Who had kept watch over their books by night. But it availed them naught. But some there were who rose peacefully. For they had prepared themselves the way And made straight the paths of knowledge. And these were known As wise burners of the midnight oil. And to others they were known as "curve raisers." And the multitude arose. And ate a hearty breakfast. And they came unto the appointed place And their hearts were heavy And they had come to pass. But some of them Repented of their riotous living and bemoaned their fate, But they had not a prayer. And at the last hour there came among them One known as the instuctor; and they feared exceedingly. He was of diabolical smile, .And he passed papers among them and went his way. And many and varied Were the answers given. For some of his teachings had fallen among fertile minds. Others had fallen among the fallows. While others had fallen flat. And some there were who wrote for one hour. Others for two. But some turned away sorrowful, and many of these Offered a little bull In hopes of pacifying the instructor And these were the ones who had not a prayer. And when they finished, They gathered up their belongings And went their way quietly, each in his own direction. And each vowing unto himself in this manner; "I shall not pass this way again." The "Daily Illini" traditionally reprints these words of wisdom penned by an anonymous author, at the beginning of each finals period. The "Daily Illini" is the student newspaper at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
