  • PAGE 4/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/MARCH 29, 1979 Carolinian sportsbriefs Track Meet The ninth annual Catamount Invitational Track Meet will get underway this Saturday at WCU. Fourteen colleges, besides WCU, will be represented at the meet, which include: Carson-Newman, the odds-on favorite, Brevard, Wingate, High Point, Lenoir Rhyne, Washington & Lee, Maryville, Emory & Henry, Milligan, and Davidson. "We have a young team this year," says Catamount track coach Paul Jones. "The majority of the team is made up of freshmen and sophomores, especially in the field events. We also lack depth in some areas. But we make up for these things with our spirit and willingness to work hard. This is a big meet coming up, and we may surprise some people Saturday." Field events are scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. with the track events beginning at 1:30 p.m. on the WCU track below Reid Gym. There is no admission charge. In the season opener here last Saturday, the Catamounts were nipped by The Citadel, 85-78. Western's trackmen captured six first-place finishes, and shut out the Bulldogs in four events: the javelin, long jump, discus, and triple jump. The Bulldogs dominated the running events, taking first place in 10 of 12 track events and sweeping the five sprint events. Freshman Eddie McGill was a bright spot for the Catamounts as he took a first in the long jump, second in the 400 meter run, and thirds in both the discus and triple jump. Gettin' High NORFOLK, Va. (AP)—A 23-year-old North Carolina surfer literally was riding high on his luck last Nov. 28 after he found a 50-pound bale of marijuana on an Outer Banks beach. Thursday Night Menu Lg. Chef's Salad •1.75 Brocolli Morney .85 Shrimp Cocktail 2.60 Onion Rings .75 Homemade Cobbler .75 Cheesecake .90 Apple & Cherry Pie .70 Milk .35 Soft Drinks .30 Above served with salad bar and trench fries But that luck ran out the next day when Norfolk police arrested Walter J. Magri. a commercial fisherman from Buxton, N.C. and confiscated the marijuana from his pickup truck. Magri pleaded guilty Monday in Norfolk Circuit Court to possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and faces a possible five to 40 year sentence. After finding the bale near Hatteras Lighthouse on the North Carolina shore, Magri loaded it on his truck and drove with his girlfriend to Norfolk to have the bale appraised. Norfolk police, who had waited seven hours on a tip, arrested Magri and 25-year-old Mary Jane Shanley, also of Buxton, when they arrived at an apartment here about 3 a.m. Nov. 29 Ms. Shanley pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana and Circuit Judge John Winston fined her $ 100 and suspended a 12-month jail sentence. Winston delayed sentencing Magri, who is free on bond, pending completion of background report. Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Tommy E. Miller said after the trial that the marijuana, wrapped in plastic, apparently came from the panamaian freighter Friendship IV. The vessel was raided Nov. 11 by the Coast Guard after the 200-foot ship foundered off Cape Hatteras Nov. 2. Traces of marijuana were found aboard the ship, but no charges were placed against the 19-member crew, which was flown to Columbia. Miller said, however, that seven 50-pound bales of marijuana washed ahore at Cape Hatteras about the same time the freighter experienced trouble at sea. He added the drug haul was valued at about $100,000. 3 In a row The WCU Men's Varsity Tennis Team won its third straight match of the season, toppling the Lenior Rhyne Bears 7-2 Thursday afternoon at Reid Courts behind the impressive play of number one man Mark Craig. Craig, a junior from Franklin, defeated the Bear's top man Lew Semones 6-2, 6-0 as the Cats swept five of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches. A transfer from UNC-W, Craig is having a solid season thus far, having given up only four games in his last three matches. He has wins over UNC-A, Radford University and Lenior Rhyne. His two losses have come at the hands of Clemson University and i University. Ohio Jmversity. The Cat netters now have a i-l record with wins over UNC-A, Radford University, and Lenior Rhyne. They dropped their first two matches to ACC contender Clemson University and a strong Ohio University squad. Kick It Around The Cullowhee Soccer Club defeated Morganton 13-0 last Sunday and moved into fourth place in the eight-team Western Carolina Soccer League. Cullowhee has played two less games than the three teams above them, so there is still hope for Cullowhee to capture league honors. In Sunday's game, Cullowhee was led by the league's second leading scorer, Scott Grumman. Scott had four goals and two assists in this game. Taylor Warner and David Jones added their share of scoring with 3 and 2 goals respectively. The next home game is Sunday April 8 in E.J. Whitmire Stadium at 2 p.m. Admission is free to the public. A Real Bomb SPOKANE, Wash. (AP)—Ronald Lowrey figured he had a real bomb on his hands when he bought an engineless, 1969 Japanese-built car from a friend. He was almost correct. Lowrey towed the clunker to his home Monday and opened the trunk—and found 50 pounds of dynamite. Lowrey,33, called police, and bomb squad officers removed the explosives to a bunker near Geiger Field.
