LAST DAY ALBERT R BROCCOLI a* HARRY SALTZMAN present oar^ JAN FLEMING'S WITH THE GOLDEN GUY Directed by Screenplay by P art TOM I COLOR United Artists STARTS WEDNESDAY P£AP £NP -POLLS By HANK KOMODOWSKI Sports Editor Western Carolina University finally brought its "Jerry Gaines Show" to Asheville last night and the results wore ac .nvnino as ever. Led by the 5-for-5 hitting of Gaines, the Catamounts proved they are a name to be reckoned with as the WCU baseball team smashed out 14 hits and 8 runs en route to an 8-8 tie with nationally ranked South Carolina in a rain- shoriened contest. Coach Bill Haywood's Catamounts never let the Gamecocks rest lor a moment as they jumped on the nation's No. 4 ranked team for two runs in the first inning, signaling the barrage to come. Alter Western had grabbed a 4-1 lead, the USC bats filially came to lite in the third inning, however, as the Gamecocks jumped on WCU pitcher Flip Watson for live runs. This only seemed to make the inspired WCU squad more determined and the Cats brought on Gaines and company to face the challenge. The two teams traded runs again in the filth and sixth innings Once again the story was Gaines. This time the supporting east included Dale Fox, Buddy Fox, Gary Grindstaff and Gary Rhyne Again, the scoring stayed evon,8-H. What even makes the high scoring game more unusual was the pitcher WCU had to crack to accomplish it. The Cat hitters racked ALL-AMERICAN pitcher Kd Bass for nine hits and five runs, the most ever given up by Bass. What's more, this was done in just over three innings. Bass has gone 30-2 in the last three years at USC, and last year pitched lo a perfect 13-0season. South Carolina went ahead 12-10 in the seventh inning, but WCU had a runner on third base and no outs when the heavy rains ir Asheville stopped the game The official scoring, therefore, reverted back to the 8-H tie since the inning was not completed. WCU outhit USC by a 14-11 margin. The quite unusual tie left the Gamecocks season record at 42-4- 1 and puts the Western Carolina slate at 15-8-1. The University of South Carolina is already assured of a spot in the national NCAA Division 1 playoffs this year, and USC will be hosting the regional playoffs. Meanwhile, WCU is still looking at a possibility of a Division II berth, although with 11 rainouts, the number of WCU victories has been drastically held down. WCU will be on the load this weekend for a rematch with Virginia Tech as the Catamounts are scheduled to play two games with the Gobblers. About 100 participants compete in canoe trip About 100 participants from North Carolina and surrounding Southeastern states competed Saturday in the North Carolina C-2 canoe championship here along a 15-mile section of the Tuckaseigee River. Capturing first place in the men's intercollegiate division were WCU students David Fulp and Daryl Bennett. Second place in the same division was won by Danny Bennett and David Nache, also students here. In the Women's class, WCU students Doris Gregg and IIIIIIIIIIIU Becky Gray took first place. Contestants competed in men's women's mixed and downriver classes in either Intercollegiate or open divisions.
