  • MARCH 29. 1979/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 5 Junior lefthander tosses no-hitter Adair baffles Citadel Rick Adair tossed a spectacular no-hitter and his teammates hit with authority, but Coach Bill Haywood was still searching for a couple of pitchers as Western Carolina's baseball learn ended Us first homesland of the season this week. The Catamounts, now 7-7, will have a few da\s off to regroup before they begin a gruelling stretch of 11 games in only 14 days. The heavy schedule begins Saturday in Greenville, S.C. with Furman and returns to Childress Field for five games next week. Clemson's nationally ranked Tigers will be at Childress Field Sunday afternoon. Arch-rival Appalachian State visits next Wednesday followed by powerful South Carolina on Thursday and UT-Chattanooga next Saturday. In terms of games won and lost, the recently completed homestand would have to be ruled a success as the Cats won four of six games. However, four games were rained out costing Haywood's young pitching staff valuable experience, not counting the potential victories. Adair pitched the first no hitter for WCU since 1976 and ihe first e\er against a Southern Conference team when he blanked Hie Citadel, 3-0. in the first game of a double-header Monday afternoon. The junior lefthander struck-out eight Bulldog batters, permitted only MM runner to reach second base, and did not allow a ball to reach the outfield in recording the first no-hitter of his collegiate career. Willie Carpenter and David Ball had two hits apiece in the win. The Citadel came back to win the second game, 7-6, when Western's rookie pitchers could not stop the Bulldogs. I he lack of depth in the pitching staff was never more evident than in Tuesday's 10 w loss to Hrskine. The Catamounts rapped out ten hits in the opening two innings to take a 7-0 lead, but could not hold the visitors. Erskine used three home runs to spearhead a shocking comeback that netted its first win over WCU i &jL)ftJKJfja3OCfaiLWflljiu0^axjK^M%^^j^j|i,^j^ w w ai n at mm w w\ mm FREE DELIVERY PIZZA ONLY!
