Once again, restauranteer Bob Dula won the overall honors, but not without pressure from his brother Bill, both of whom drove the same MG Midget. Bob Dula, Kit Carawan and David Cashion took first place class honors in Categories I, II and III respectively, which included a large trophy and a cash award, both furnished by Speedy's Pizza among other prizes furnished by local merchants. David Jackson, who organized the event, clocked the quickest time in Category II but disqualified himself since he had driven the course prior to the timed runs. Several newcomers to the sport attended the lly in ye. un ter hn Cooke, overall winner two years ago, ended up in a friend's Ford Fiesta but could do no better than eighth place in Category 1. Bill Dula, Martin Thaller and Buck Rogers took second in class trophies and money from Speedy's, and Bill St. John, Hal Meisenheimer and Phil Sorrentin took third place honors. Doyt Mason, consistently quick in his Honda Civic, was failed in his efforts to win Category 1. He knocked over a pylon for a two-second penalty on his fastest run, which bumped him back to fourth place. (. utegories I and II were both mixtures of MG's, Fiats, VW's and other makes, while Toyotas swept the first tour of six places in Category HI. Bob Dula took home albums from Upstairs Sound and IDs Newstand, a T-shirt from The Varsity Shop, and a bottle of cold duck from The Grapevine. The other winners took gift certificates from Smoky Mountain Auto Parts and Lay's Department Store in Sylva. Pizza's for first, second and third place winners were furnished by The Gallery, in addition to the cash awards and trophies from Speedy's Pizza. WCU grad and former Western Carolinian Photo Editor Drew Clark (Inset) got the ride of his life In the back of David Jackson's Flat 124 to bring some behind the wheel shots. Drew managed to squeeze off about six frames before giving up to hold on for dear life. All in a day's work for a sports photographer. Clark now works in St. Louis, but returned for the weekend to shoot the tubing race and the autocross. A determined Bob Dula pulled out all the stops on his last chance with a blistering 45.3 second run. This was Bob's second Top Time of Day vlcotry in as many autocross events. Kit Carawan surprised a few people in his VW Super Beetle with a Cat. 11 win. He outran the likes of second place finisher Martin Thaller in his Volvo P1800E and Hal Meisenheimer's TR6. David Cashion, a second place winner In last semester's event, drove smoothly to a class win this time. He then turned the car over to Buck Rogers who drove to second place in Catagory III.
