  • NOVEMBER 2, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 11 Carolinian opinion and commentary SAGLA shafted Dear Editor, The much-awaited 1978-79 budget was revealed Monday night to the dismay of many student organizations. As President of the Student Association for Government and Legal Affairs, I realized that money to be appropriated was scarce and that reasonable cuts could be exoected. I, together with the more than 60 members of SAGLA, was understandably angered and confused over the Finance Committee's decision to fund SAGLA with only $2,000. This decision was especially hard to understand when SAGLA has received budgets of $5,500 (1976-77) and $6,760 (1977-78) in the past. Concerned students have asked me what happened. Why is there such a drastic cut in SAGLA's budget? Have petty campus politics, which have reached epidemic levels in the Student Government Association this year, been employed to victimize SAGLA? I can answer that yes, SAGLA has been grossly underfunded. The speakers selected by SAGLA for 1978-79 are Jesse Jackson, Jack Anderson, Ralph Nader, Dean Rusk and Sam Ervin. It takes money to line these speakers up. Money that the SGA's Finance Committee did not appropriate. I can also answer that yes, ample evidence points out the primary culprit in SAGLA's unfair treatment lies in the petty campus politics which abound in the SGA. Was SAGLA victimized because members of the SGA did not agree with the SAGLA speaker selection for 1978-79? If so, it's simply censorship and a shame. The WCU "student" is the primary concern of SAGLA. Our goal is to help students become more politically aware of the world around us. SAGLA is highly respected for bringing such outstanding speakers as James Kilpatrick, Daniel Schorr, Ron Nessen, William Colby, Tom Wicker and others to campus for the enjoyment of the student body. SAGLA sponsors delegations to model United Nations which simulate the actions of the United Nations in New York. These are just two of the worthwhile projects that SAGLA is involved in. In cutting our budget, the SGA's Finance Committee has attempted to deprive their fellow students of many quality programs. We, the members of SAGLA, are determined to give the students of WCU the most worthwhile programs possible in 1978-79 regardless of the Student Government Association's uncooperative political maneuvers. Students who want to find out more about the many worthwhile projects of SAGLA are invited to come to our next meeting on November 16 at 6 p.m. in the New Science Building Auditorium. For students interested in learning more about the model United Nations simulaitons, a meeting will be held in McKee 10, at 6 p.m. tonight.
