  • Page Four THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN November 1 1933 CATAMOUNTS LOSE HARD FOUGHT BATTLE The Western Carolina Catamounts met defeat by the East Tennessee Teachers, of Johnson City, on last Thursday, Oct. 26, by a margin oi 26-O. Bailey, East Tennessee, proved to be outstanding by scoring three of their touchdowns. Bailey scored two of his touchdowns on J5 and 36 yard runs and his third marker was made on an eight yard dash through the line. Bales, substitute for the locals, unreeled the longest run of the game when he stepped 60 yards to score a touchdown. Boyer made good two of his three attempts to kick extra points. Paul Schachner, flashy Catamount quarterback, starred for the Cats. His punting, passing and ball carrying proved to be the outstanding performance of the game. Hudson and Justice also played outstanding ball for the Cats. Score by periods: W. C. Cats o OOO—O E. T. T. SPORTS TART AND WELDON STAR IN TENNIS The school Championship Tennis Tournament came to a close here Friday afternoon with Tart, a new member of the club, defeating McCracken, one (it last year's racketeers, 6-0, 6-4, for the Women's Group, and Heddon defeating Ferguson, also a new member of the club, 6-4, 6-0. The girls' finals between Tart and Mi' in ken was a very interesting match; Tart outplayed McCracken the firtl set but in the second set McCracken came back with plenty of pep and fight, then the spell broke and Tart again started a thrilling series of driving that branded her as a very good prospect for the college women's team. Tart will probably play No. 1 and McCracken No. 2. However, the team will not be selected till spring and all will have an equal chance, but ability and a fighting spirit are vitally necessary. In the boys' finals Ferguson took the first three games, Hedden the next two, Ferguson one more and Hedden turned loose and won the last set 6-4. In the second set Hedden had Ferguson outmatched, the score being 6-0. The last set was not as bad as the score indicates, for there were several noticeably good shots. Hedden will probably rank No. 1 man. He was No. 2 man last year and is showing up well this year. Tennis is being sponsored on the campus this year by the Tennis Club. The club numbers about 30 and the prospects for the spring season are looking very encouraging. The new club has been recognized by the Student Senate and plans are being made for interesting intercollegiate matches this spring. Thanks Again Mr. Henn Coach Poindexter and the entire Catamount squad wish to extend a vote of thanks to Mr. Henn, manager of the Lyric Theatre, who on several occasions has been host to the football squad.
