  • Women's Association Holds Poster Contest THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY, JANUARY 24, 1974 PAGE 3 lllllilllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll A ■/golf The American Association of University Women is sponsoring a poster contest to kick off the Symposium on Global Interdependence, which is set for February 14. The theme of the symposium is taken from a quote by Buck- minster Fuller, "We can no longer live alone-we are on one space ship." A 4-member panel will explore the question: How do we make the right de- cisons for survival? Any student who is artistically inclined is invited to submit a poster on the subject of world interdependence. Politi cal, ecological, economic and.' or cultural aspects may be stressed. A $10 prize will be given to the first place winner. Second place winner will receive a ticket to an international dinner at the Canterbury Inn following the panel discussion. Posters should be 22"x28", and should be turned in to McKee 121 by January 31. Judging will be by a committee of the AAUW comprised of Gun- seli Tamkoe, Ruth Nerboso, Judy Carpenter, Nina Anderson and Cheryl Faust. Veterans Are Offered Counseling Services by Randy Abee If the veteran doesn't care, who cares about the veteran? The Veterans Counseling Service urges veterans to overcome their apathy. They want veterans to know their full benefits. The Counseling Service gives prompt response to any problems concerning veterans. However, if the question is not covered by the service, a daily call to the state V.A. office in Winston-Salem will get an answer back in about ten days. New programs have been set up for veterans. A VA work- study program at WCl! employes veterans in jobs related to them. These jobs are in Jackson County and surrounding areas. The Counseling Service is presently working to obtain more of these jobs. A tutoringprogram aids those veterans slumping in academics. Veterans with a D OR F average in a subject can apply through the service to re- Art Workshop To Be Held Jan. 23-25 An art workshop on the techniques of using crayons, finger and poster paints, water colors and modeling clay will be held at Western Carolina University Wednesda v through Friday, Jan. 23-25. Forty WCU art students are expected to attend the workshop in the Carol Grotnes Eelk Building for instruction in creative art education, its materials and its tools, according to Dr. Perry Kelly, head of the art department. The workshop is provided by Binney and Smith Inc., manufactures of CRAYOLA crayons and will be conducted by Mrs. M. J, Root, the firm's art consultant. ceive assistance. The Veter- ands Association pays a qualified tutor $50 a month, up to nine months, to help the student. A free reading improvement program also assists those with problems in this field. Basic study skills and college courses benefical to veterans are also offered. Food programs aid needy veterans. The Veterans Counseling Service stays informed with current issues concerning veterans. A conference with people from different sections of surrounding areas keep veterans up to date. Representatives travel to cities throughout the surrounding areas publicizing to get veterans to enroll in institutes of higher learning, but only a fourth of all veterans take advantage of V.A. benefits to further their education. The representatives always put in a plug for WCU and last quarter 15 veterans were received here as a result of their efforts. WCU's ten hour reduction in needed credit hours for graduation and the coverage of all expenses through the (i. I. bill are major factors in getting the veterans to come here. However, if the veteran's need is at some other institution, he is urged to attend there. Started late last summer, the Veterans Counseling Service is funded through Washington, D.C. It does however work in conjunction with Richard Cameron, Assistant Dean of Student Development, The council consists of veterans who work on a part- time basis. Ronald Rhodes, Burce Anderson, Jot Smith, Fred Roane or Willis Setzer will always be on hand in addition to Cris McCormick, the full-time secretary. located in 218 Killian, hours are from 8-5 during the week.
