NOVEMBER 2, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 13 Cottrell •From Page 7 program strong and solid and it takes a lot of patience. I guess that's really the toughest thing. We are going to be a better team but I don't know how that will show in the standings." Practicing since October 15, Coach Cottrell is particularly happy with the play of Pearson, Terry Rutherford, and Larry Caldwell along with his "four freshmen." He has also praised the play of two walk-ons, Bryan Pagan of Asheville High and Mike Holt of Tuscola High. It is Pearson, though, who really draws the coach's praise. "He's working harder than I've seen anyone but Bubba work," says Coach Cottrell, "and he's catching up with him. He's got the potential to be a great player." In three games last year Butch knotted close to 25 points and eight rebounds a game on the average. He should be the workhorse for the Cats this season. Reid Gym has also undergone some improvements. It had several bad spots in the floor and was one of the poorer surfaces in the Southern Conference last year. This summer the floor was replaced with a new hardwood maple flooring, making it one of the better surfaces. Reid was also repainted and the locker rooms remodeled. Carpet, paint, and work was donated to the Cats to turn the team dressing rooms into lovely purple and gold, first class facilities. "We wanted the visiting teams to see we care and that we are first class," Coach Cottrell explained, "This school has so many positive standpoints and our recruiting was good. I've got the best assistant coaches anywhere (Jack Fertig and Rick Miller) and we want to show those standpoints." The tough schedule and difficult conference play along with the general inexperience of the team are the stumbling blocks. Furman, UTC, ASU, and Marshall should lead the conference race while every team improved itself in the off-season. Last year Furman whipped both UNC and NCSU in Charlotte and lost to Indiana by one point in the Eastern Regionals. That is an indication of the improvement of the conference. "The Southern Conference is the up and coming basketball conference in the nation," says Cottrell, "but there may be better teams in it but no one will out hustle us." The overall prospectus is good for the 78-79 season. The important things, the general improvement of basketball in Cullowhee, are steadily coming on. The Cats will lose some games, but they will win some and surprise the experts again. With full houses the process can be quickened. As far as rebuilding the program at Western, Coach Cottrell feels he's right on schedule. In 77-78 the Cats won seven games—seven more than predicted—and played very close to their potential. Considering the improvemrnts on every level made in a year's time and the potential for more, this season should be interesting. "A lot has to do with how quickly our young kids learn. In 14 years of coaching I've never been associated with a finer group of men. And we have a great student body we'll be playing for. I just feel when you put things together good things happen," Coach Cottrell says. Add a little patience, a great schedule and full houses, the winter in Cullowhee should be a whole lot warmer and a whole lot of fun. Soccer evens record The WCU soccer team evened its record at 6-6-1 last Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 win over UNC-Greensboro in Whitmire Stadium. Scott Grumman, Mike Booker and John Corley scored goals for Western. The Catamount kickers travel to UNC-Asheville for a 3 p.m. game today. The final game of the season will be against the powerful University of South Carolina, Friday, November 10, 7 p.m. in Whitmire Stadium. SERVING HOURS 5-830 pm THRUS.-FRL-SAT. NIGHTS 3 rd.
