Whenever rodeo season would end, Crocker made his living doing odd jobs. He speaks fondly ol Lis employment on "working ranches." He mentions "rounding up cattle" aiul "going to work on horseback." "A rodeo clown aint nothin' but a bull rider with his brains kicked out 99 Explaining the origin of rodeos, Crocker savs they are "derived from cowboys on working ranches getting together and competing with one another." Crocker points out that rodeo is American in Its routs. He says. "Rodeo is probably the greatest sport put together in this country." Rodeo is "also one of the fastest growing sports in this country." According to Crocker, there were over 250,000 paying spectators at the Cheyenne Rodeo this vear. "Thai's pretty good, considering the location: just a crossroads in Wyoming." Also, this was Ihe first year a rodeo was held at the coliseum in Charlotte." He explained that rodeo wasn't considered a sport then. "Newscasters wouldn't even acknowledge it." After Crocker and his Friends got the newscasters out to the rodeos, he says they couldn't believe it. "Now . they love- il." Asked to explain rodeo structure. Crocker savs. "There are many different rodeo associations across the country. I Started in the Southeastern Rodeo Association, headquartered in Love Valley, NC." Ilu- Southeastern Rodeo Association is a small organization. The Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA) is the oldest cowboy association in the United Stales. The International Rodeo Association (IRA) is the biggest. Crocker says the IRA has been doing a good things for rodeo in recent years. Concerning rodeo's rewards. Crocker says. "All rodeos are for prize money." The money comes from entry lees which can be anywhere from $25 to $500, depending on the rodeo. Gary Crocker's family is as enthusiastic about rodeo as he is. His daughter. Heather, 6, is an avid fan. Skipper, 11, his son was once billed as "the world's littlest rodeo clown." Crocker's wife. Mary, used to be a professional barrel! racer. (Barrell racing involves riding a horse at top speeds around harrells in a clover leaf pattern. The evenl is timed.) "These ladies are terrific. It's a great sport for them. I think some could give some of the top hands in men's rodeo a good show ." Anyone? who might be interested in viewing a rodeo should take note: The I.onghorn Rodeo is held twice a year at the Civic Center in Asheville. It's a good rodeo." Also, there is a rodeo held once a year in Greenville, SC. The Rocking K Ranch in Charlotte usually has two a year. For those adventurous souls who might be interested in actual rodeo riding, Crocker recommends joining an association. He says the best one for an amateur to join is the SRA. If anyone needs help getting started, Crocker suggests contacting C.W.Kidd, Jr. on Maranda Road in Charlotte. He says. "Tell them of your interest. They'll see that you have all opportunities." When Cary Crocker talks about rodeo, he continously points out the devotion of cowboys to their sport antl their fellow cowboys. "Rodeo is one sport where your closest competitor will do everything for you." Crocker's own infatuation with rodeo no longer involves active rodeo riding. "I love it dearly, but after you've been at it a while, you don't get well quite as quick." Asked if he participates in rodeo to any degree, Crocker said. "No, I only dream about it. "I love to talk about rodeo. I guess I'm like a child who goes off to spend the night. He always wants to come home." FYSHHH
