  • rflHiniftn wpiii iidi i April 27 officers charged the subject with trespassing in connection with an incident which occurred on campus and had been banned from campus at that time. On 4/28 at 11:46 p. m., a member of the faculty reported that a male and a female were loading computers into a vehicle in front of Stillwell. Officers checked a male and a female in front of Stillwell, but they were not the ones who were reported. Officers stopped a vehicle for running the flashing light at Wachovia Bank and then arrested the male non-student driver for DWI at 3:10 a.m. Intoxilyzer results were .16%. April 28 A professor reported that a student had left a threatening note on the top of a test. The student stated it was only a joke and apologized to the professor. A tree fell in the Motor Pool Lot causing damage to three privately owned vehicles, two state vehicles and a light pole. No one was injured. April 29 Officers assisted Jackson County deputies in serving a warrant for assault on a male non-student who was staying with his girlfriend in Scott Hall at 2:40 p.m. WCU April 30-May 2 In connection with a continuing investigation, a male student admitted that he had inadvertently brought a shotgun to campus after hunting in his home town. He had parked in vehicle in the Methodist Church lot. The incident will be referred to Student Affairs. At 1:59 p. m. on 4/30, officers responded to the 5th floor of Walker where a male student suffered an alcohol overdose. That student was transported to Harris Regional Hospital for treatment. A male non-student who was in the same room had been banned from campus on a previous occasion. That subject was arrested for trespassing. He resisted arrest and was also charged with drunk and disruptive, communicating threats, and resisting arrest. Officers assisted Jackson County deputies in searching for three or four males in a black truck who followed and threatened a male student from Sylva back to campus on 4/30. The first thing that concerns me is the fact that I cannot tell where the administration ends and the student "leadership" begins. It all looks like one big line. It appears that the administration is helped more by the SGA than the students. This is great if you are a part of the administration, but as a student, I am concerned. I once thought that, as a whole, students on this campus were apathetic. I still believe this to be true, but now I know why. The student "leadership" are followers. They don't lead the students; they follow the administration. No wonder students are apathetic, they do not have anyone who wishes to lead them. The students on this campus could accomplish many things that once seemed impossible. However, they have no one who wishes to organize them. The SGA is more concerned with garbage cans on campus than student opinion. Ever wonder why we do not have things like 24 hour visitation? Some say it is because of the area we are in. That might have some effect, but I believe if students who lived on campus were organized and led, we would be enjoying 24 hour visitation. I am not advocating a revolution, just someone who cares enough about the students at this university to stand up for their interest. That is not happening in the current SGA. I do not mean this to be condemning to the members of the SGA, but rather the system that has been created. I do have some suggestions as to how the SGA can redeem itself with the students. First, break away from the administration, the SGA does not have to bow down at the sight of the "White House." Stand up for the interest of the students. Secondly, people complain about apathy on campus; well do something about it! How about conducting phone polls throughout the year asking students what they think? It takes very little time and it shows the students that their opinions count. Third, get people involved by giving them opportunities to be involved. Hold open forums once a month to allow students to discuss problems and issues. It is the SGA that needs to make the effort to reach out to students, not the other way around. If the SGA knows what the students think they will be able to serve and—dare I say—lead students on this campus. This might just be a bunch of idealistic goals and hopes that I have, but wouldn't it be great to be able to stand up to the administration when the student interest is not being served? I think it would. This is the challenge that I make to the SGA and its leadership for next year: Be student leaders and not followers. Get the students involved. Then you will be serving the students instead of the administration that would love you to be just followers.
