NEAL Special Contributor A war Is being be fought in Cullowhee. A group of Individuals have challenged a foe they cannot see. although Its path is coated with death. There is no other defense than a solid offense; these men and women have devised a plan to guard us from this awful enemy. They hope to weaken the monster by eliminating its food supply, or as it is more commonly known, human ignorance. How much do you really know about AIDS? Do you feel confident that plague will never infect you, a friend, or a family member? More importantly, what does Western Carolina University off er to students who feel a responsibility to learn more about this killer? There are no Pope protests or condom give-aways, but WCU has joined the battle against AIDS. Graham Infirmary's Dr. Donald O'Neal directs a group of faculty members called the AIDS Task Force. The mission is to provide everyone In Cullowhee with a necessary amount of information concerning the dreadful disease. WWCU and the Western Carolinian are two of the media implemented in O'Neals attack. The group has successfully used radio talk shows and educational articles to reach the students. Staff Nurse Susan Dyal, chief organizer of the effort, feels that It Is Important for all students to have the opportunity to learn about the disease. "We are also Including an AIDS education program in the Health 120 classes," a general education requirement. There is more, however. The AIDS Task Force has updated all staff and faculty members with the latest comprehensive research and theories. Dyal is armed with pamphlets and video tapes, willing to visit classes, dormitories, Greek organizations, and other groups interested in AIDS information. The pamphlets are available at the infirmary at no cost. Subject matters cover areas such as AIDS through drug abuse, AIDS in homosexuals, and safe sex. The video tapes feature both animated and documented approaches, and can be borrowed at no charge to the student. The strategy Is a solid one on paper, but the application is much more difficult. For itto work, students must want to learn the secrets and techniques involved in "safe sex". If you ignore this avenue feeling confident that something like AIDS could never happen to you. think again. There is a slight possibi lity, but still a possibility, that it already has.
