JANUARY 12, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 7 Dwayne Norman 'He's in the tradition of Eagle Moss' Dwayne Norman, Western North Carolina's Back of the Year who rushed for over 4,300 career yards at Brevard High, heads a list of eight football signees announced this week by WCU head football coach Bob Waters. Norman, a compact, 5-7, 135, rushed for over 2,000 yards last season for Coach Carroll Wright's Blue Devil club that went 11-1-1 and to the state 3-A semifinals. "We're excited about the prospects of having Dwayne on our team," said Waters. "His statistics speak for themselves. He is extremely quick and talented and one of the toughest young men for his size that I've ever seen." Waters said Norman will be given an opportunity to play Western's tailback spot this fall, but held open the option that Norman might be used as a wide-out for the Catamounts. "He's in the tradition of Eagle Moss," Waters said in comparing Norman to the Cats' other fine receiver who complimented Jerry Gaines during some of WCU's most devastating passing years. Moss, an inch shorter and about the same weight, also had an outstanding career at Brevard before starting four years for Western Carolina. . Waters said size would have to be considered a factor in Norman's collegiate future, but cautioned "Dwayne has been totally successful with his size up to this point." "He's got great acceleration and quickness," said Brevard's Wright. "The thing I'll always remcnber him for is his tremendous competitive spirit. He wants to • succeed very badly. You don't coach a kid like that 'often," Wright said. Norman piled up 271 yards on 12 carries in one of Brevard's early games last season and scored 18 points on runs of 34, 65 and 47 yards in the Blue Devils' 19-14 win over defendimg state champion Pisgah during his senior year. His cousin, Jeff Norman, is a letterman fullback for Western, lending prospects of a possible Norman- Norman backfield for the Cats. have had some line young men and football to us from Brevard High over the years Rand we certainly feel Dwayne has great potential in our Anita to move? The following article appeared in the Sylva Herald dealing with Anita Bryant's purchase of land in Jackson County. "We have signed a deed tor acreage in Jackson County, for Anita Bryant and family to have a home," said Nason E. Kinkaid Properties, Rentals-Sales- General Contractor of Miami, Fla., and Route 3, Sylva, in a letter to The Herald. Miss Bryant, popular singer, was here last summer vacationing with her husband and family. "I believe the vast majority of people in Jackson County will be pleased to have people of their character in their midst." Kinkaid said in his letter. He did not list the specific location of the property. Kinkaid included a clipping from the Miami Herald showing that on Friday Good Housekeeping Magazine announced that Miss Bryant was the surprise winner of its annual poll of women readers as "the most admired woman in the world." Miss Bryant spearheaded a successful campaign to repeal a Dade County, Fla., law prohibiting discrimination against homosexuals in housing and employment. "As Anita has won the poll by Good Housekeeping as the most admired woman in the world, by a wide margin ahead of Pat Nixon and Rosalynn Carter, we are glad that we had a part in her fight earlier this year, in Miami and Dade County, on her part," Kinkaid wrote. Miss Bryant's face is familiar to television viewers for her commercials concerning Florida orange juice. Kinkaid referred to her as the Orange Juice Queen. Western's seven other signees to date are: Steve Mullinax, a quarterback from Greenville's (SC) Parker High; Bruce Valentine, a center form Kings Mountain High; Jimmy Harmon, a tailback from Southwest DeKalb High in Decatur, GA; Tim Hassard, a tight end/offensive tackle from Myers Park High in Charlotte; Charles Martin, a defensive end from Cherokee High in Canton, GA; Gary London, a defensive back from Lithia Springs High in Douglas- ville, GA; and Dean Smith, a defensive back from Campbell High in Smyrna, GA. Mullinax, a left-handed quarterback, passed for 2,137 yards his junior and senior years at Parker and rushed for 780 more. He is 6-1, 170 pounds and has an. extremely quick throwing delivery. Valentine played center and linebacker at Kings Mountain and finished second in the voting for player of the year in his conference. He is 6-2, 205 ana considered an offensive and defensive prospect with Western. Harmon, 5-10, 175 pounds, rushed for an average of 6.1 yards per carry for Southwest DeKalb last year (189 carries for 1,161 yards) as his team won the North Georgia 4-A Championship. Harmon could also figure as a defensive back at WCU. Hassard was highly recruited and is the nephew of former Western head basketball coach Jim Hartbarger. At 6-3, 220 pounds, he is considered to be "one of the top defensive line prospects we've had in years," according to Waters. Martin is noted for outstanding quickness for his size. Both London and Smith check in at 5-11, 170 pounds and are earmarked for the secondary. London is also considered to be a possible at a skill position on offense. Smith was considered to one of the top defensive badt prospects in the Atlanta area last season. "We've been deliberate in our recruiting so far and will likely continue to do so," Waters said in announcing the signees. "Our aspirations to succeed in the Southern Conference and on a Division I level in football may have changed our recruiting pattern somewhat, but we are still looking for the best athletes that will be happy in our situation and style of football. We think the young men we have signed thus far fit into that mold." Coach Steve Cottrell and the WCU basketball team would like to thank the students for their support of the 77-78 Cats, and hopes that this support will continue. He encourages all students to attend the game against The Citadel tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Reid Gymnasium. This will be the first home conference game for the Cats, and should prove to be very exciting. YOP OF STAIRS Elegant Evening Dining Wednesdays Through Saturdays 5 until 8:30p.m. University Center.
