JANUARY 12, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 5 Basketball Cats 3-8 Coach Cottrell: 'A crucial time for us9 the Catamounts returned to action Monday night after a 21-day holiday break and immediately faced a (bur-game home stand that head coach Steve Cotrell feels could determine the success of the Catamounts' season. "It will be a crucial time for us. We will be at home against four very tough teams and we need to make a move," says Cottrell. "We were the only team idle in our conference over the holidays and that could have an effect, but we've got to start making some headway it we are to have a successful season.'' Western finished the first third of its season back on Dec. 19 with a close 82-76 loss to Davidson in the Charlotte Coliseum and currently has a 3-7 overall record and 1-2 Southern Conference mark. The four-game home stand for WCU began Monday night with North Carolina A&T. Next will be a pair of conference games with The Citadel tonight and with VMI on Saturday. Virginia Commonwealth's surging Rams visit Cullowhee the following Monday to close the series. All of WCU's home games in Reid Gym begin at 7:30 p.m. The Cats will have to make the most of the extended stay at home since a road swing has them traveling for six of the next seven games. "We started practice again last Tuesday and will go two-a-day to try and get ready again," said Cottrell. "We might have a different look for a few people," he said alluding to the fact that three of the upcoming games will be rematches. Cottrell has also had praise for several of the Cats despite the fact the WCU has lost four in a row. "Jimmy McCallister has had two real good performances and that's a positive note," Cottrell said. "And, the play of Terry Rutherford has been more consistent. Forrest Callaway is helping us quite a bit too,- despite his lack of stats," the WCU coach added. McCallister, a sophomore forward, scored 16 points against Furman and 19 against Davidson. Rutherford pulled down a season-high 17 rebounds against Davidson. He is the only other Cat in double figures in scoring with 11.4. "We've had to depend on Terry a lot. but we've got to give him more rest," Cottrell said. Turning to Wilson. Cottrell remarked, "He's been the best player on the floor. 1 just hope he doesn't realize that we've been off for three weeks and continues to play at the same pace." "1 can't say I'm satisfied with everything so far about our play," Cottrell said. "But, we've proven we can compete and I'm well-pleased with some things that have started to happen with our players; like the li- V * t % ■ u * *■ ri -7-1 * 1 £'■ .\w^T' W MP » < f ^W 8^ # T\ DREW CLARK PHOTO support from our tans; and. the attitude to get bctti ■." WCU is still shoooting poorly from the field. 41 per cent, and that concerns Cottrell the most. "It's really tunny," he says. "1 thought we'd be an excellent shooting team and rebounding would be our weakness. So far, it has been just the opposite. We've been out-manned, but we have out-rebounded nearly everyone we have played. Our shot selection must improve." Cottrell said. Guard Bubba Wilson continues to be the heart of the Catamount team with outstanding shooting and rebounding. Wilson scored 3i points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Dec. 19 Davidson game to up his rebound average to 8.4 and his points-pcr-game to 24.4. Through nine games, WCU has out-rebounded its opponents by an average of 32.2 to 41.3 per game. Western's four-game series could well be the finest set of games to be played in Reid Gym in many, many years. Although WCU defeated The Citadel 65-64 earlier this year, Cottrell expects the Bulldogs to be tougher with the return of leading scorer Randy Nesbit. Nesbit missed the first game with WCU when teammates Rick Swing and Tom Slawson scored 15 each. VMI's appearance in Reid Gym will mark the first time the two Southern Conference schools have met. The preseason favorite in the conference, VMI won the league title last season and advanced to the second round of the Eastern Regionals in finishing 26-4. Back arc six lettermen and three starters including Ail-American candidate Ron Carter and center Dave Montgomery. Virginia Commonwealth, which downed WCU 94-73 in the Richmond Coliseum earlier this year, has reeled off eleven consecutive wins to date ana nas an outstading season going under second-year coach Dana Kirk. VCU's top guns arc Gerald Henderson, Wes Carmack and Ren Watson. Watson is ninth in rebounding in the nation with a 13.0 average. Bud to sponsor women's pro ski race series Budweiser beer will sponsor the first Women's Professional Ski Racing Circuit this winter with prize money totaling over $40,000. The three-meet competition begins March 18-19 at Waterville Valley, N.H., then moves to the West at Squaw Valley, Calif., April 1-2, with the final event taking place at Vail, Colo. April 8-9. Formal announcement of the women's circuit was made by Michael J. Roarty, vice president-beer marketing for Anheuser-Busch, Inc., brewers of Budweiser. "Budweiser is pleased to be involved in the inauguration of the Women's Professional Ski Racing Circuit," said Roarty. "It marks and overdue breakthrough for women in the pro racing scene. It is our hope that the Budweiser Women's Pro Ski Racing Championships will help broaden and further encourage women's professional sports in America." Jill Wing, producer of the new ski racing circuit, stated: "The race format will consist of two days of competition, in both giant slalom and slalom. Each race will consist of a series of head-to-head (dual challenge) confrontations between two competitors. The purpose of the series is to narrow the field through eliminations // ^YUM YUM DONUTSHOP 82 East Main St. WIDE SELECTION 0FD0NUTS.
