ALPINE BUILDING 293-9741 Has Arnold Ziffel lost his pigness? Save the new shows thai debul during this period, summer television is usually a regurgitation of re-runs of recent shows. During my vacation from school, I was able lo check out a lew of these repeals. A comedy program, in particular, started the wheels of my mind rolling after viewing the comedy from another viewpoint. I hat show was Green Acres. As you probably know, many mores of our society are reflected via CBS. NBC, ABC, and whatever B-C!!! True. Green n also m 11 E MEM'S ROOM Eacloru. American culture. First of all, Arnold Ziffel is different from the dominant society (Humans) yet he seems to reel that to minimize these differences rather than to accent them is the best way to be accepted. Ziffel is unaware of his roots in the ancient hierarchy of Hogdom. The religious interpretation of the pig as an unfit being is uiiknov human fai human bei Acres was written to amuse entertain, howo some imagination one can realize the show expose sonic of the profound prejudices that an into the network of American culture because even comedy writers are unable to escape the values and customs of the society from whence they came. As previously mentioned. Green Acres is in fact a comedy. The town, Hoolerv illc. is a small village with depol. drugstore, general store, newspaper office, and post office located in the same small structure. The major charcters in the story are two New Yorkers and- or "City Slickers." One is the Harvaid-cducated-law ver- turned-farmer and his wife who detests country living and wants to return to pent house life. The other characters include the regular grits—country folk—of such a rural locale. That is. except for Arnold Ziffel. Il is with the characterization of Arnold Ziffel that I will attempt to present some of the biases and bigotries of Althoi I /.ill told i tell that story—Arnold illy attempts to out human the human, yet he is used/rejected for the fact that he is a pig!!! denial of his pigness has created a major logical problem forArnold Ziffel. He is constantly tied by the pork eaters of the world and oftimes ' lg and/or annihilation of fellow TV. or found in tears after brother and sister pigs or seeing a baton commercial. Who am I? Arnold Ziffel become assimilated into hun much as possible to fitfully by trying to ire. He has removed many traces of his pigness from his life. He attends school with human children, reads and writes the English language. He goes to movies and even enters contests as do most human children. The dominant culture—e.g. humans—has even stripped him of his pig name, replacing it with the comical nomenclature, Arnold Ziffel. Clearly Ziffel's problem is one of identification. He does not consider himself a pig. To hate one's self and one's family is not normal, To perpetually wish to be like others, in this case a pig wanting to be human, is not normal. In fact, that which is normal for pigs will never be normal for pigs as long as the abnormal (e.g. Homo sapiens) defines what normality is. This is what Arnold Ziffel is got to get hip to. I wonder if George Orwell had been a pig would his Animal Farm have depicted human beings as wanting to become as much of a pig (pun not intended) as possible. Warning: in every Arnold Ziffel there's a potential pig. Saki Oladele Duduyemi ACADEMIC RESEARCH ALL SUBJECTS Fast, professional, and proven quality. Choose from our library ot 7,000 topics.
